I went to boarding school and we used to have 4 weeks at Christmas & Easter, then 8 weeks in the Summer. Only a week at half term though.

That's a bit sad OP. They're only young for such a short space of time. I love mine being home. Going to take her to see a national trust mill next week. Can't you take yours somewhere? Or doing baking or crafts. Even if they moan to start with they usually get into it.

When I was about 8 my mum was talking to another mum during the summer holiday. The other mum said "I'll be glad when they're back at school"my mum replied "I won't I like having them at home"

Nearly 50 years later that sticks in my mind and makes me realise how much my mum loved us.

Hate to say this, as it might sound harsh, but maybe get off fab until the evening and entertain the kids?

Not so much harsh, as incredibly patronising

Could be read that way, I don't log on here at all when I'm with mine, only time I even touch my phone when I'm with my kids is to take vids or pics of them.

11 is difficult, they don't always want to do things with parents. Sometimes.a good long dose of boredom gives a person time to think and thats no bad thing

I used to love it when my kiddies were younger and it was half term or holidays, loved having them round me and doing things together, walking, baking and making stuff.

Enjoy your kids whilst they are young and still at home, make the most of it as before you know it they would have flown the nest

Check out 50 things to do before your 11 &3/4. Lots of good (free) ideas there.

I cannot bear it when I hear people bemoan the fact their kids are off school!

School is not ( or shouldnt be seen as) free childcare.

Children grow up far too quickly, this I know from experience. I would kill to turn back the clock.

give him a list of household chores he can do to stave off boredom, then stand back and watch him magically find all sorts of activities he can take part in

Bored kids are always challenging, particularly when they're past the age of playing with toys. It's even harder these days as the current generation were born in the broadband and games platform age, and it's all too easy and tempting to let them spend their days in front of a screen. Not many of us can live up to the image of supermum or superdad, and fewer still have the unlimited time, the ideas and the energy to keep kids entertained every waking hour. With some success, though far from total, we've always tried to get ours engaged in clubs and hobbies and learn to keep themselves entertained. They still get bored and ask 'what shall I do now?'

Yep! Its a rare kid who wont say they're bored at some point.

I used to get bored when I was a kid, that's where I got the household chores idea from, my mum used to come up with a list when I said I was bored

Invite one of his friends round - children love having mates round. Then they can go to the park or do something together. I always think two are easier than one at times. I love being home with mine in the school holidays. We are making Halloween Decorations and goodies next week. Oreo spiders will be on the menu.

Lol, I wonder if every house has such a list. Ours has paid jobs on it, and the kids have copies in their rooms - gathering dust

Over the rainbow, under the bridge

As someone has already said, boredom is actually good for kids.

It makes them use their initiative and imagination. Constantly filling their time for them is not necessarily a good thing.

Yep! You need to have time to think about "stuff" to formulate ideas, come up with your personal philosophy, get in touch with yourself etc.

I used to spend hours staring out of the window as a kid, just thinking.
