Well its that time of year, were kids have given me their shopping list, what they want for Christmas, does anyone recommend or know much about laptops, i was going go PC world and ask their advice, but i have very little knowledge on them, and they could sell me donkey and i wouldn't be any wiser, any help or advice would be very much appreciated.

Personally I'd get the windows laptop which can be a laptop for school work etc but you can also detach the screen and it becomes a tablet! Think it's about 350. .!

There are a couple of offers on at Argos at the moment.. I bought a HP laptop which flies on the internet, and you can download packages like open office which has programmes for calculations, spreadsheets, word processing, I was thinking rather than you buying Microsoft Office.

The one I bought has 1TB Memory (Will hold lots of video and particularly audio) 8GB Ram... Look at the GHZ processor as well as this will also be an indicator of how fast the machine is.

I saw laptops in asda last night, a place I wouldn't have expected to see them in.

Remember that once you've decided which model that many places do price matching. Including john Lewis who usually have very good after sales support.

Ive got a Lenovo that I've had for years and is still a good machine. When we replace it, I'll get another one.

We have a Chromebook for every day web, email etc

Is that the hp pavilion? I'd also recommend this one.

I'd never had a problem with laptops until this past year. Lenovo in my experience have been rubbish.

I took the plunge along with the extra cost and bought a MacBook.

I'm very happy with it so far and the Retina display is FAB!

I would suggest that you look for a machine with a minimum of an i5 (i7 if possible) quad core processor and as much ram as you can afford (will make it as future proof as you can afford). The size of the screen and hard drive are really of little importance as portable USB hard drives are really cheap and getting cheaper all the time, and most TV's can be used as monitors if a larger screen is required for games. Also as a rule of thumb you can say the smaller the screen on a laptop the longer the battery life when using it on the move.

PC World price match with Tesco , Asda and John Lewis - I remember reading that as just been in there for an hour sorting out a poorly laptop. Have a good look in all the PC shops and look at reviews online too.

Take a look at Ebuyer. They have a web site. They have daily deals.

Also another web site is 3000rpm. They sell a lot of end of line Lenovo laptops as well as ex business machines.

I won't post web links in the forums, but Google is your friend.

There were some Dell deals this week at about $250 pounds. Featured on hotukdeals site, and discounted by order codes. Quidco and topcashback pay cash back for sales from a lot of retailers too.

Keep it simple and don't get tons more spec than they need. Probably an Intel i3 processor is sufficient top.

OP don't ask PC World advice, they'll just sell you what will give them the biggest bonuses. And the advice you'll get here will be based on personal preferences, or biased Mac v PC positions.

The best thing to do is research the information for yourself, just so you understand the differences, then ignore all the rubbish about processors, and to some extent hard disk size. Most modern computers have more than enough storage and power for the general public. Now go out and buy the best machine you can afford.

That's all you need to know. Everything else is guys just showing off about how much they know and how big their hard drives are.

Best advice on the thread, before you buy a vehicle you would want to know if you need to peddle a bicycle to school or move 40 tons of granite to the other side of the country.

Same applies to computers, start with what is the job you want to do with it then relevant advice can be given.

For the other problem stick a carrot in your back pocket, if you feel your arse getting nibbled it's a donkey.

Main thing is ram.. 4gb and above def needed with windows 8! I3 or i5 processor is best (kids wouldnt need an i7)

Also make sure you set it up.. Adult lock on internet and also make yourself the admin and them give them a guest account so you can check on what they are doing with it
