"Just watching the news, results of a BBC survey of 1000 15-18 year olds. Findings were that 25% were happier online than being in the real world, 36% said it sometimes make them feel lonely and 36% have physically met someone who they first met online. It seemed that something being liked i.e. an update on Face ache etc was the main draw for teenagers, but it leads to a dependency to have an online item liked to feel good. I know I am on here far too much, so are we too addicted to social media at the expense of the real tangible living and breathing world? " You are asking this here? Fab is addictive it self

" I do use my phone an awful lot, but don't think it impedes my social life or how I interact with people. " I know what you mean re your phone. When I am out, my friends and I make sure we don't go on our phones, as we realised one night that we were all sat there looking at them. Since then, it is phones away for our evening out.

"Plus, as is probably obvious, I say what I have to say without much regard for whether people 'like' it or agree with it." Is that a reason for not interacting with the real world? Or are you just telling us something we already know

"i don't think it is the time spent on them, more what they are used for. The need to update activities/comments to be liked and a self esteem boost, the odd one or two maybe but I think it becomes a problem for a good few." Agree with this - I spend a lot of time on various forms of social media but for me it's a tool to keep up with different groups of friends. I don't need some sort of validation from it, and it's quite sad for those who do. Certainly v glad Facebook etc weren't around until I was an adult.

"Maybe, but for some of us it's a lifeline, a feeling that we are not alone. So it can be a good thing " i think using an electronic device as a lifeline might be the very reason why you need to not use it for that, and find ways to have such connections in person

And I like it | |||

I'm on Facebook for about 20 hrs a day and constantly checking this site, my kik and What's app. I'm much happier online than out and about although obviously I do get out. I've met lots of people in person after meeting them online. They are some of my best friends. I do need to cut back though. Any tips?

" I would agree with the above I've often coined the phrase "internet swinger" for those keyboard worriors who sit and moan about not getting meets. If they actually left it alone and went to a social or club the whole experience would be better for them. But then they don't seem to be able to always needing someone to hold their hand. We have often been accused of being "Facebook swingers" too. Social media is a part of most people's lives in some shape or form and some do let it take over.
