What is all this about? I see it more and more and haven't a clue what it means or why people use it? #so what does it mean? Do you use it and why?

Theres a status in my area with one up now.

Why bother, its for twitter. Tweet the guy instead of trying to be cryptic.

It's stupid.

It originated on Twitter, as a way of categorising tweets to make them easier to search or so you can see trending topics.

The right place

It comes from Twitter. The hashtag is a way of identifying tweets on a certain topic so that others can search for similar tweets. Since then hashtags have been used a number of ways. For instance to make a parenthetical remark. #knowwhatImean

Hash tagging doesn't float my boat but I can just about bear the sillyness of it. What really rubs me up the wrong way are people talking about themselves in the 3rd person on here or as status updates, comments such as "pops in to have a look, blushes and leaves". Anyone having same allergy to such comments?

Nah. I think hashtagging makes monitoring of conversations easier, and therefore is hugely beneficial to marketing. It's also amazing to see how it's changed the consumer experience, too, with companies offering social media support being rated more highly (think of ASOS, for example).

Plus, it blows my mind to see a topic go viral on a global scale, and be able to track the movement. You couldn't do that as easily without hashtagging.

Hashtags were first used in the 70's IT and were the way of denoting global rather than local groups on IRC.

They are inherent to sites like Tumblr where they can be used to find post about who you ship.
