So Heathrow is to start screening for Ebola today, followed by Gatwick and the Eurostar terminal next week. Thats the Capital protected, but what about the rest of the Country ..... Is if a case of "we are ok, fcuk the rest of you"

A better idea would be to completely quarantine the affected areas. Pull out all medical and aid workers and don't allow ANYONE in or out of the area. The outbreak will resolve itself then.

Trouble is, our compassion stops us from doing that.

That's what I was wondering. What about all the other airports! Do they not need screening or are they inconsequential

90% of people coming I to UK from 3 affected areas come via Heathrow/Gatwick/Eurostar so it's just focusing resource where needed rather than disregarding rest of UK.

There warnings/advice they releqsed gave me a giggle "if there is a corpse that appears to be infected dont touch it", yea because your natural.instinct when you see a corspse with flesh hanging off and rotting is obviously to touch it isnt it!

Sorry but when dealing with something as contagious as this you need to containg 100% of if not just 90%

By screening do they mean asking if you have a temperature or not?

there is that... but the one biggest issue is that there are not any direct flight from the UK to the three countries where the outbreak has occurred (Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia)

so unless you screen everyone off a interconnecting flight that may have shared a plane with a carrier... and those symptoms may not even show up for up to 14-21 days.... its going to be impossible to catch everyone.....

"By screening do they mean asking if you have a temperature or not?"

no they have special machines that are going to be able to give you a body scan for temperature......

but then you need to put it in every port and every airport,

even the US have only put these scanners into 4 airports (JFK, Newark, Washington Dulles and Chicago O'Hare) at the moment.......

An ineffective practice put in place to reassure an increasingly restive public.

The effective practice is already being done and that is screening passengers before they board the plane in the affected countries.

Considering the incubation period for the virus is 21 days then it is extremely unlikely that someone showing no symptoms at the start of an 8 hour journey, will start showing symptoms at the end of the journey.

If we don't want Ebola on our doorstep then we'd pull our finger out and make serious efforts to fight the virus at the source.

They are the most likely entry points from infected areas so it makes sense concentrating on them. Regional airports have few direct connections to potential danger areas.

Should the reginols screen people from Amsterdam flights. Schipol is a big interchange airport isnt it?

It's ridiculous if you ask me, a complete waste of resource and manpower. The screening needs to take place on exit of the affected countries not on entrance of a essentially a random country like the UK.

It's just political/propaganda manoeuvring to placate the hysterical masses.

Heathrow has no direct flights either. In fact there are no different flights from the affected countries to the UK.

Its all gonna go tits up. We can't afford to give health workers an extra 1%. How are we gonna stop something like this when, and it will, reaches our shores.

Time for me to retreat to my fall out shelter I think.

There's room for a few more people. Rates can be discussed later lol

not just Schipol.... but you can add to that Paris, and Brussels, and Madrid....

and thats just the one change options...

if you looked at the two change options.. you could add to that list for example, Frankfurt, Rome, barcelona, and about another 10-15 destinations.....

but because the main communities for these people happen to be in london and the surrounding area that is why it is based on those areas...

It's hard to see anything other than as strict a quarantine as can be applied doing much to stop the spread of Ebola.

Allowing potential carriers to traipse around the world in the hope someone will notice they're ill before they manage to infect someone else is like Russian roulette with other people's lives.

I can't but feel part of the West's seeming reluctance to bite the bullet on this is due to the fact most victims and most carriers are black.

Cynical maybe, bu couldn't we just agitate Liberia to start another 10-12-15 year civil war.

Also, why do they call them civil when they're quite violent affairs?

Maybe we should just drop the victims bodies on the IS and save on munitions?

If it worked flinging dead horses it may work again?

It would have to be helicopters at low levels as the internal organs are all mushed with Ebola and out of the back of a plane it would be like dropping ripe pumpkins.
