are you a risk taker?

In every day life do you take risks, or are you more risk adverse and play it safe?

My work life has dealt me a bit of a curve ball which means taking a risk, or playing safe. In short i have been reapplying for my job, and have been told I'm not wanted in my current role, but offered a promotion. So my options are take a small redundancy package, or take the new role for very little increase, but a lot more work.

The risk is of course take redundancy and find a new job. But the considerations are that it equates to about 2 months salary, and I have the welfare of my son to think about and the chances of finding work now are slim as we approach Christmas. There is also the fact not being in a job, makes it harder negotiate salary, as they will see that I need a job.

And to be clear I'm not going to make my decisions based on a forum, I'm just interested in people's attitude to risk.

Angus & Findhorn

take the promotion, work really hard in the role and expand your CV.

but look around.

it is easier to find work when you are in work.

good luck

I was in a similar position to you a couple of months ago with the exception that our children are grown and support themselves. I am normally risk averse in my daily life and where work is concerned especially so however I took a risk and stepped off the edge of the cliff. So far so good.

hiding from cock pics.

I'm a risk taker..

That is a hard choice for you op.

I think I would take the new role and consider looking what is available too.

There is nothing wrong with doing the best for your family and yourself, you can always give notice if you want to change job but you will have some security being employed while you re_iew options for the future.

I may have got this wrong, but it sounds as if your heart is not in staying with your current employer. By the size of your package (really no pun intended) you are clearly a protected employee. Id take the promotion, use it to refresh the cv and get job hunting in earnest taking comfort that many employers have annual budgets and will soon know what they have to spend on recruitment. The slight increase in your salary will also improve your negotiation position.

Good luck. My experience is that when I look back on stessful times they have created growth and were positive overall

I play it safe and feel like i dont acheive anything by doing so.

On the odd occasion i have taken big risks it has never worked out and i end up back at square 1 or 2 steps back, taking a year or 2 to get back where i was in the first place.

I still have ambition, and one day one of my risks will pay off, planning a risk next year as it happens which will mean leaving my job. I have a saying "afraid of risk or regret"

Like a few people above, I'd take the promotion and take the opportunity to look around for another job.

I was in a similar position 4yrs ago and I took the redundancy package. Mine amounted to 3 months salary, which I was confident would tide me over.

I ended up being out of work for 5 months and at 52/53 I didn't think I would work again.

Safeguard your immediate future, look after your boy and look around with a bit of security behind you.

Good luck fella

North of The Wall - youll need your vest

Id definitely take the promotion.

Its an opportunity to work hard, hopefully prove myself and be in a strong position for negotiating better pay if the opportunity arises with the company at some point in the future.

If that opportunity doesnt arise then Ive gained more senior experience and Im better placed to apply for other jobs.

I took a big risk & moved down here on a new business venture, bringing my family too. Sadly, the business failed but, we've stuck it out & have made ourselves a reasonable life. We're not exactly rolling in money but, always have a roof over our heads & food on the table. Things get better year on year & our circle of friends is on the increase.

Not sure I've been much help, Op!

I took the risk twice and presently temping but I've only myself to look after so no big deal as such. Working hard to find permanent but this side of Christmas is harder than after as most employers are looking for seasonal and not permanent. I will persevere however

Agree with everyone else. Stay, see how it goes but look around whilst still getting paid.

I take risks on some things but not big things like jobs.

Good luck.

. Depends on your financial circumstances . Two months redundancy is not a lot. I would be inclined to take the promotion and see how it goes . When I was made redundant ,I got a years money which helped but it still took me three months to find a long term contract role which involved travelling eighty miles . Stayed in B + B. . I never take risks with driving , health or safety , but will do with investments . Good luck in your decision.

I have taken huge risks in recent times but they have not paid off. Mind you, playing safe did not work out either. I guess the most important question is can you live with the consequences of your decisions.

Depends on the outcome. If the outcome is favourable then yes, I take risks, if it's a negligible outcome then no, I stick to the status quo and enjoy.

Exactly what I was going to say. Take the job and look for something else in the new year... You might also find that you take the job and enjoy it so that's secret option no 3. Good luck whatever you decide though

London.

I am definitely a risk taker in my job. The thought of being in a boring job would drive me nuts.

I'm naturally NOT adverse to risk.

But hey, NOBODY is entitled to "tomorrow" so fuck it.

I take calculated risks in my private life, due to my job I don't take any risks at all.

It is a hard one that, I know someone who left their job for personal reasons. He thought he would get a job fairly quickly, two months later he had to get an agency job paying £6.50 an hour.

I could often be heard saying that I wished I had the courage to just walk away from my job, you know like those people you read about who somehow manage to start up businesses catering to niche markets and wax lyrical about the improvement in their lives because of it. Most of us have responsibilities though and while the risk might seem attractive I think nearly all of us will be risk averse when it comes to work.

I spend most of my life trying to eliminate risk and working up a sweat at work.

In your case the promotion looks to be the only game in town, so go for it and good luck
