Titz Towers, North Notts

Byzantium - The Apogee, by John Julius Norwich is very good. Middle of an historical trilogy, but it is the jewel of the 3.

Freeborn John by Pauline Gregg

Taken from wikipedia:

"John Lilburne (1614 – 29 August 1657), also known as Freeborn John, was an English political Leveller before, during and after the English Civil Wars 1642–1650. He coined the term "freeborn rights", defining them as rights with which every human being is born, as opposed to rights bestowed by government or human law.[1] In his early life he was a Puritan, though towards the end of his life he became a Quaker. His works have been cited in opinions by the United States Supreme Court.[2]"

If you haven't read it, The Master and Mragarita by Mikhail Bulgakov, very different, darkly comic. The devil cuts loose in Moscow!

Have this book, fantastic insight into the creation of modern political thought. John Lilburne was the first giant of English radicalism.

Also, Peter Ackroyd's History of England Vol III - Civil War, deals with the run up to the cataclysm of the C17th Wars of Religion.

Try Alan moore ' s voice of the fire, a fiction history of Northampton! I know it doesn't sound like much but it's a stunning and occasionally challenging read

Anything by Neil gaiman is good too! If you fancy something of a more comic/graphic novel flavour I can give you a massive list

Pillars of The Earth and World Without End by Ken Follet. These 2 are set in the Middle Ages. One of his first successful books, Eye of The Needle, about World War II espionage was also made into a TV movie starring Donald Sutherland.

I'm just reading Edge of Eternity by Ken Follett. Part of a histoical trilogy spanning the 20th century. First 2 covered the world wars and were great. This one covers 60's and 70's.
