Just back from local comedy club...Steven K Amos was on and by heck was he awful! I can only think he was pissed or stoned because the first half wasn't too bad then in the second half he started repeating his gags from the first half, missing significant bits of jokes and mixing his words up...last time he was here he was bloody brilliant and I'd persuaded my mate to come and I felt bad she'd forked out £20 for what was basically a car crash (though he'd come on the train so maybe it was a train crash)

Fortunately, us Arse Enders are a fairly good natured bunch so the heckling wasn't too bad, but I felt heart sorry for our amazing Theatre Director who works her socks off to get top class comics to the Arse End of Nowhere when she had to dive onto the stage to rescue him with the raffle for free tix to the next gig and a bottle of wine (kept well away from Mr Amos)

Any other forumites been to gigs where they couldn't wait to get home and crack open a bottle of wine?

Only terrible gig I went to was Lou Reed. The man could barely walk off stage unaided.

I'm not surprised Stephen K Amos is losing it a bit though, he's had a bit of bad press recently. Maybe that's affected him?

That's a shame, especially as you had seen him being good before.

I can't think of anything where it has been so bad I would describe it as a car crash.

I've not seen him, but some of the stuff I've heard on the wireless hasn't been bad. It sounds a bad night. I feel for you and for him, being stood in front of an audience.

I've seen a few poor comedians on a £1 a head try out night for new talent, but they don't count, as they are learning new stuff.

I saw Paul Foot divide an entire room last Saturday, with some laughing and a fair few taking the chance to leave early as he was last act. Some chaps even cheered when he announced he was closing his set.

Thankfully I've only ever seen one comedian die on his arse. I won't mention his name, as I don't think it was typical of him and was due to circumstances. He came on after a very physical comedian who had been standing on chairs, running around the room and working the audience. This would have been a tough act for anyone to follow and this guy hesitated, which was fatal. He was then heckled and neither destroyed the hecklers nor got enough laughs to drown them out. A real shame as I felt there was a good set waiting to break out from the bit he did get out. I don't think it helped with him being from down south and playing a tough Miner's Welfare, he didn't judge the room

I didn't like the pogues. He just swanned about smoking and drinking. Missing whole verses out. Spitting all over the place. It was horrible. He was pissed as a fart.

Arse End Facebook is buzzing with supportive comments for the Theatre Director fortunately...I've been to 30 or so gigs there and can only think of 2 others that weren't up to scratch (one being Rob Newman on his first stand up tour in years, the other 3 female comics trying out their Edinburgh Fringe sets), but this was truly beyond awful - if it'd been a gig in a strange place, I would have left...

Rob Newman is interesting in the same way as Terry Christian. Not especially funny per se, but would be someone I'd pay to be in the audience for an evening with. When he was in the Mary White House Experience I wasn't convinced he pulled his weight.

Terry Christian was here a few weeks ago and he was brilliant!

i am surprised to hear you had a bad stephen k amos gig because he is normally really good.....

I took have suffered from a bad "rob newman" gig... it was horrid....

I actually like "workshop in progress" gigs because there is much more interaction, a lot cheaper and much smaller rooms so they are cosy....

actually one of the funniest was jasper carrot... he just appeared unannouced one night and gave us 30 minutes of brilliant stuff...

p.s if anyone is into comedy and the "background stuff"... may i heartily recommend the "comedians comedian" podcast... it is fantastic listening... a bit like "inside the actors studio" for comics....

Yep, last time he was awesome (and took the piss out of me something rotten when I succumbed to bladder rot and went for a wee before he finished)...Rob Newman I think was nervous as it was his first tour in a good while, but I still found a lot of his material funny

Many of the comics that come to Arse End are doing testers for their tours (like you say, cheaper, that's a big plus for us

)

Our theatre holds (probably) a max of 180ish folk so it does give the comedians a much more intimate gig (and as we're all inter-related it also gives them extra material to play with)
