Because I have no hair on my head to pull out.

Am quite a placid sort of chap, but having just walked through town and practically been bundled by charity workers armed with clip boards. One of which who saw me with my head down looking at my phone, pounced out in front me and almost yelled "gooooood morning sir" scaring the shit out of me. Had to give him a short sharp fuck off, after fending off 5 of his colleagues.

Call me miserable, but I hate these cunts, then you get it again on your way back to work

I'm not a fan of this method if gaining benefactors. I know they've got a job to do but I find it a bit pushy to be asked the same thing by four or five people on the same street.

If I 'choose' to give to charity, it'll be one of my choice and not one forced upon me by some over exuberant spotty teen with a clipboard.

Was at my kids house a month ago, this one girl knocked the door 3 times in a hour, 4th time, I answered. She says, hiiiiiiii are you ok? I says, no not really, she says, oh why not? I says, because you keep knocking on the door, kindly stop, goodbye. We did laugh

Charity or rather "charity" became a big business this days. They hire those "fund risers" on percentage of what they collect from people.

In same time, charity board members pay themselves fat salaries £100k,£200k and so on.

And then, there is not much money left for actual cause they collect for.

Big charities like Oxfam are the worse. Spend much more on their "own" costs (fat salaries for top and "consultants") than on their projects.

Simply, don't give them your money. Most likely they get it from government anyway.

Chuggers!

Hate them.

It's sad that charities actually have to pay people to generate income. I've no problem popping coins in a collection box but I'll be buggered if I'm going to give my bank details to some muppet recruited by an agency to accost people in the street with sob story sale pitches!

They get a short 'no thanks' from me - and if persistent a prompt 'not interested'.

Or a rare 'fuck off!' for the serious hardcore few who follow you down the high street.

A

Sorry - but without donations from the public there'd be no hospices - cancer would still be a certain death sentence - there'd be little protection for abused children or animals etc etc!

What matters is that you do research to find the charities that don't misuse donations - and support causes that really matter to you!

However - I beilieve that accosting passers-by in the street is wrong!

Charities should (and i think perhaps are) be given free adverts on tv and in newspapers to reach us that way! Xx

Unfortunately, you both are not right:

"The code of practice says that collectors ought not to pressurise the public to give their support, but they can use reasonable persuasion. However, they should not approach individuals that may reasonably be considered to be vulnerable adults.

If you tell them you’re not interested, the fundraiser should politely stop their approach."

Not sure about any others but Save the Children get 70p out of every £1 donated and only 30p actually goes to 'the needy'. I was an avid supporter until I was told this by an employee.

Like another said I prefer local causes now like schools and groups.

I think we are all agreed. I am much happier donating some change than signing up to a direct debit.

And I do find that asking them about their administration charges tends to put a damper on their enthusiasm

I will not pay to a charity where 40 % goes to charges. And there are many.

I do all my donating directly, and always tell street collectors that. Although sometimes I donate anyway, depends on the cause, maybe the day, and if I've got money on me.

What bugs me is when they try to emotionally blackmail you. That gets my goat, so I always ask, "What percentage of your take home pay did you donate to charity last year?" I'm around 5 to 10 percent, would love to give more, but unfortunately can't ... at the moment.

If someone is standing quietly with a tin, you can make your own decision if you want to give or not, that's fair. It's the ones that rattle it under your nose or call out to you.

My favourite one though, when they call out "collecting for disabled kids" ......"its okay, I've got one" is my reply. They get a bit stumped with that

They are a pain and do put me off going into town centres. Even the packing at the end of a checkout feels like a guilt trip to donate.

It's a catch 22 situation. So many people and animals depend on the true charity workers (those who work hands on) and they need funds. However, I've witnessed first hand "not for profit" charities which means after admin of salaries, company cars etc. And omg they pay the going rate.

My advice, please give to a cause you feel strongly for but do your research first or the best answer, give some of your own time to charity work. You'll be shocked how many genuine people are struggling on your own doorstep.

can I just add (as ref my previous post) not all charities are like that! I think it's shameful that some are and pay figures etc are all open to the public so check these it beefier deciding who to support.

I work with people with dementia on the ' front line.' .. One to one and I can only afford to as Mr s has a decent job.i do it for personal reasons and job satisfaction . I genuinely care about my clients and am touched that I am viewed as a lifeline by many. As with everything there are the sensational stories that everyone gets as above. .. and then there are people quietly working away helping others who get lost in those perceptions

"figures etc are all open to the public so check these it beefier deciding who to support."

Theoretically yes, but try to read through any of accounts report published by big charities. All you get are aggregated "total" numbers, not showing where money was really spent. Usual trick it to combine all costs like rent, utilities etc and pay together.

Another one is to publish total spent on "projects". But that includes "admin costs". To get real figures you need FOI request. If lucky, you can learn that 60-70% "magically" disappeared as various administration and management costs.

Next thing big charities do is to significantly overpay for pretty much everything. Starting with utilities, ending with medicine and other things (if any money left) they buy and send to needing. Lots of "middle-man" firms make fortunes on this.
