A Staff.

I think its the best breed of dog, certanly for children.

It comes reccomended by The Dogs Trust I think, maybe another organisation.

Train it well from the start and even if its bulky it shouldnt pull on the lead.

I dont know if people want to google it but Im sure there are only two breeds that are recommended if you have kids.

Staffs

&

A chinese breed.

They used to be called 'Nanny' dogs due to their fondness and protectiveness with children.

I know the owner isnt a child but you would get the same values.

Easy to find in dogs homes, they dont always 'Mault' (shed hair).

My first paragraph may be complete bullshit, but Ive always believed it to be true.

"Any dog is loyal if you treat them well and love them"

True but some breeds are just more boisterous by nature and need more attention than others

I have a greyhound and a labrador the lab wants your undivided attention 24/7 the greyhound is happiest curled up asleep, labs don't make good dogs for people who don't have the time they demand from you

We have a labradoodle and he's as daft as a brush. So much energy & he's a fairly big dog but thinks he's a tiny dog, keeps trying to curl up on your knee.

Great with kids, just wants to play. Lovely, if slightly bouncy dogs.

There are so many factors to consider when choosing a breed.

I dont like staffies. They may be good with children but i dont think they are so good around other dogs and that is important. I always put my dog on her lead when i see one. Of course you cant tar a whole breed with the same reputation but i would never have one.

I'd love a pair of poodles. Standard ones, none of those handbag yappy breeds for me. They are gentle with people and take training really well.

And they're seriously cute, especially when cut into a lamb cut. Though my bessie mate is a dog groomer and has already warned me that when I finally get my dogs she'll be cutting them into show cuts!

They are 1 of only 5 breeds of dog that are recommended with kids. They were nicknamed a nanny dog because of the affection and loving nature that they have. We have a staffyx and also had a staffy bitch and they and lovely dogs. The bitch from a pup but the x was a rescue dog. He was that loving and good natured that they used to take him on the road shows with them to promote dogs trust. They can be a protective dog aswell. We had only had our x for about 6 month when he first showed that side to us. He would not allow another dog that was wondering about by itself come anywhere near our child when he was in his buggy. He is excellent with other dogs but always seems to be on the look out for the kids when other dogs are near.

They can be destructive as pups but good training can get that out of them.

Oh bless you. I thought that after I lost my beloved boy four years ago. But with my boys leaving home the time was right.

I dont feel I am replacing my boy, because as you rightly said they are irreplaceable, I have however got a lot of love to give, and miss my puppy cwtches. I feel I am opening my home to allow someone else the love and care he received. We had him home for a couple of hours last weekend and the house felt right xx

It's also a comfort that my new pup is the great great nephew of my boy

I just hope he isn't as stupid! Xx

We had a bitch gsd but had to regime her after o lying having her a few weeks as she was petrified of men. As soon as jay walked in the room she was shaking and peed all over if he went anywhere near her even if she heard him raise his voice in another room she cowered and wet all over the place. It was awful seeing her in such a state and being so scared that it just wasn't fare on her to keep her. She had obviously been mistreated by a previous male owner but was such a loving dog to any women.

She was removed with a single women where she felt comfortable and safe.

The only thing that annoyed us was the hair as she was long haired so it was everywhere. She was so lovely that was a small price to pay for a dog like that.

Agreed. Always kept GSD's. Loving, loyal and so protective.

I am eagerly awaiting my new addition. He is only six weeks old, so couple of weeks to go. GSD puppies are the best!! Mine looks like a teddy bear

Lucky you!My GSD died 3 years ago.Absolutely beautiful dog.Shes irreplaceable.

She had obviously been mistreated by a previous male owner but was such a loving dog to any women.

i had a rescue doberman, it was believed his previous owners had put fags out on him, he had a lot of scares round his bum that were obvious fag burns, everytime he saw someone light a fag up he would cower and litteray pee himself

it's awful when there is nothing you can do to ease it. But it got to the point where it was unfair on her. We could deal with her having an accident but it was the fear that you could see in her when she was sitting shaking and so scared. It made us feel so sorry and bad for her that she didn't even feel safe in her own home.

I wouldn't agree with that as they are a very large do that are extremely strong. They are a gun dog so need a hell of a lot of exercise compared to most breeds.

We have a 3 year old staffy and a 13 month Rottweiler.

Staffy's are so eager to please you, which makes them very easy to train.

Regarding the bad press/bad incidents, any breed of dog owned by idiots who don't train, will be a bad dog.

As for our Rottweiler she's just lazy lol

I grew up with English Setters, totally bonkers and bordering on intrainable but if I was in the position to have a dog it would be a setter. They are so soppy & loving, excellent with kids & just a joy to have around.

Proper Staffies don't have 'long legs'. Personally, I ask the Kennel Club for the names of reputable breeders.

Dog's Homes do not have Staffies. They may have cross breeds but not full Staffies.

Aaaaarrrrggggghhhh!!!!!!

A dog is a dog but any dog that's not a pure breed is a cross-breed, aka MONGREL! All these stupid names like cockerpoo, labradoodle, sprocker, etc are simply ridiculous, nothing but the person who has bred them wanting to make them sound like something they're not.

The best breeds in my opinion are German Shepherds and most spaniels, just not the yappy, trappy little king charles.

Also, for a dog to actually justify being called a dog, it has to be bigger than a cat!!!!!

There is no such thing as an Irish Staff. Also if you cross a Staff with a pit bull it is not a Staff - it is a cross breed. Or in other words,a mutt.

I am talking about pedigree Staffs. Not a mix and match job to suit someone's idea of what is seen as a tough macho dog.

What you describe seems to be a deliberate attempt at breeding a vicious dog.

Genuine pedigree Staffies are great family dogs.

Border collie bitch or a Anita are great dogs for companion for a woman.

There used to be a white alsation in the next road to where I grew up, funny dog that was. It was the best guard dog of the woman, but totally nuts.

If you tried to stroke it or talk to it when it was out for a walk with the woman, it started barking at you. When it was in the house it was a big softie.

Growing up a friend of the family had a few of these dogs, they were really nice. The oldest was the funniest, she would only let strangers stroke her whe new she was in the mood. If she wasn't you got a growl and snapped at.
