"Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Megga Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz check the fuse the cable, general condition, plug it into the test press button see what tester tells you unplug " you forgot to mention the bit about filling out the little sticky label with tiny writing ..... and if you're really, really lucky .... cutting off the flex if it fails (this usually provokes abuse and ill feeling if it's someones heater or desk fan etc)

"I did the C&G course and as a qualified electrician it was seriously boring, I learned absolutely nothing and could have taken the multiple choice test straight away and still passed (I got 98% and dropped one question, for which I actually complained to City & Guilds because of the poor syntax in the question - namely the use of "should" instead of "must". Just another example of educational and proof-reading standards going down the pan...). However, the poor "maintenance" chaps from BMW who were doing the course were having real problems, they had no idea what they were doing. PAT testing is easy, any idiot can do it, UNDERSTANDING what it is you are testing, and why, is quite another. You obviously know all about Earth Loop Impedance and Fault Paths, Earth Continuity etc, don't you, because you won't understand PAT otherwise? The maintenance guys I spoke of above didn't, they hadn't a clue, and subsequently failed the exam, despite myself, the instructor and a plumber who was there spending the morning trying to explain the basics of Earthing. Remember that you don't need one of these courses and certs to PAT, you just need to be "competent", it's a way of proving that you are. If you are going to be accepting responsibility as the "competent person" doing PAT, you should have a basic knowledge of electrical principles. Yes, anyone can do a 10 minute on-line course and press GO on an Auto-test, but in the event of an accident and the HSE stepping in, I think you'd be in serious shit if you couldn't explain basic Earthing. It's going to happen one day, trust me, industry bodies are actively trying to see the end of these companies who offer 100% pass rates to people who don't understand what they are testing for. That doesn't make anyone safer. Buy "The Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection & Testing of Electrical Equipment" published by the IET, it has all the info you need. If it reads like Double Dutch, you might want to tell your boss you aren't the man for the job! " As an electrician who has also done the C&G course I agree with everything he said.
