I meant more the actual theory more than practice.

Although as regards practice, a little communism mixed with free markets hasn't done China any harm bearing in mind it's now the World's second largest economy and will soon outstrip even America, their flagrant disregard for human rights notwithstanding.

And of course I've read Animal Farm! I was talking about how 'Dengist' economic reforms boomed China's economy, that's all.

Communism is stupid and dead.

However, its weird now, because the banks here are owned by the state, and one of the most successful capitalist countries is Communist China.

Wonder if Hong Kong Democracy will make dominoes fall, or if Tibet is a Chinese Takeaway?

Nahh, the Chinese Communist Party is that monolithic, that entrenched into Chinese society I can't honestly see an Arab springeque revolution toppling the remaining communist regimes. The 1989 Tiananmen Square protests didn't, so why should the present ones in Hong Kong? Hong Kong wasn't exactly democratic before we handed it over anyway.

The only long-term consequence I can see of the Hong Kong protests is that democracy in Hong Kong will ultimately be abolished.

Also, communism is against oppression. It is for giving people equal rights and treating all people as if they have rights.

Can't really have anything like that in a world where politics and its spokespeople (media) treat certain people like trash and give them stereotypes. Needs different, more liberal, and cognitively intelligent, people running things to even get it in place.

Yeah. I'm for it, the people themselves have to actually want it though because they would be the ones running things on their own behalf. And they have to treat everyone else like they are worthy if the same things they are.

All references to Marxism, communism, etc. etc. were replaced with the concepts of 'Juche' and 'songun'

that is 'self-reliance' and 'military-first'

In short, a highly xenophobic breed of Korean nationalism, with a big focus on the army. Communism isn't even given lip-service in North Korea now.

This is in contrast to China, Vietnam, Laos and Cuba, which still are communist, even If only in name.

I don't think the actual idea of communism (in the Marxist sense) is stupid, from the time it was written (the nineteenth century) the idea that the proletariat (the working class) were being exploited by the bourgeoisie (the middle class) makes a lot of sense.

Only problem is that now we don't really live in an industrial society in the west like we did back then, we live in a post-industrial society, and a working class as a massive group of people who labour at making things doesn't really exist any more, instead we use the labour of less-developed countries, most notably (and ironically), China. Instead, in the west, you still have a middle class, but you also have an underclass that has no real purpose or function.

Perhaps in light of that marxism needs to be re-defined.

We're still being exploited. Got some working rights, got a bit of rights for those not being used in employment, and this all took decades to gain (couple of centuries altogether). Now half of these have gone in the past few years and more will go once we leave the EU (Cameron is trying to negotiate rights away without leaving first though).

Think it will take drastic measures and a change in how people themselves live their lives, also overthrowing of the government and political system, as it is, to get anything half decent for the employed around the world now. Even New Labour seem to be becoming more conservative.

People want cheap shit because that's all they can afford, pretty good for those making mass profits based on how economics is now. Not so good for the exploited, and this stuff only exists because the exploited exist so that a few people can make more money than they'll ever need.

I wanna go back to the happy place in my head now...
