Now that I think about it, I agree... Yellow Submarine is (unintentionally) their novelty-song-for-charity-style-record isn't it?

Got to be, In My Life. They played it (and Imagine) at the end of a documentary after John Lennon got shot. I've never really listened to the words until then either!! It's lovely

Let It Be.

There's no way they can be dimissed as crap when so many musicians across many varied genres list Lennon/McCartney/The Beatles as their inspiration.

I think a song writer/s should be judged on the longevity of their songs and tunes, I don't think anyone could argue....whether you like their material or not, that the Beatles have written some the most iconic songs that the world will ever see or hear.

Totally agree with Jane there. 40-50 years on their music still has the ability to entertain, inspire and excite.

Revolver for example still sounds fresh and relevant. I defy anyone to put on 'Good Day Sunshine' and not be uplifted.

Could be here all night trying to pick my favourite and depends on my mood. Hey Jude if I was forced.

revolver is regarded by many to be the beatles best album and very good it is too but i love the abbey road album with all those short songs spliced together its just brilliant.

Yeah you're right about Abbey Road pleasures - the 'long medley' at the end is McCartney's crowning achievement.

He was the creative force holding the band together at the time (depending on whose version of events you believe). By the Lennon was so out of it on heroin and Yoko he could only contribute very simple songs (I want you) or gibberish (sun king, come together)

A controversial view among Beatles fans I know...

I love Here comes the sun too. :o)

Rushden

Different favourite for every hour of the day! No matter what some might say, it cannot be denied that thier influence is still driving bands. Jane had it about right with her earlier post.

There are places I'll remember, all my life though some have changed...

The very poignant start to "In My Life" a liric that just gets better and better... When we have it on in the car, I always sing it to my lovely lady, because no matter what I will know or have known, she will always be the one for me. Above all others...

Spot on about In My Life mr Rumour.

What amazing is that Lennon was only 24 when he wrote it.

It takes many songwriters years to create a lyric with that level of maturity.

Another track off Rubber Soul of a similar ilk is Girl - playing through my head now.

Might have seemed like I slagged Lennon earlier. Only when the drugs took control of his life did he lose the plot.

And he was a right shit to Cynthia. Yoko was too.
