Three months for inappropriately touching a woman once is quite harsh.

Yes he did wrong, he has certainly learned his lesson, he won't be doing it again.

What sentence do you think would be appropriate ?

Why.

Found guilty of 1 (one, not 14) over the clothes sexual assault.

Also no previous criminal record.

Finally only convicted by a majority decision (after our normal unanimous requirement failed) of 10-2.

This is the way our justice system works for single crime criminals.

I'm not sure actually. But considering the maximum sentence could have been 10 years, three months suspended for 2 years is bizarre. Justice system is a mess

Considering all of the factors outlined above, it seems a fair result.

A person is sentenced for what they have been found guilty of, with all other relevant things considered. They don't get time added for being a wrong 'un, or for not being found guilty for something else.

your right the justice system is a joke but not in this instance bit harsh for his first offence even though i dislike the guy.

What is rediculous is its his only offence yet he gets 2 years how absurd is this when burglars,car thieves etc continually re-offend and continually get suspended sentences and community service even after offending whilst on bail. Id cut their ffffffing hands off or worse

to punish or to ensure there is no repeat offending .

If every person who groped another at that time all got nicked there would be no room in any prison for anyone else.

None of us, I guess, sat through the entire proceedings so judgements on the basis of media reports are difficult.

I can't believe DLT is the only person who has made unwelcome advances towards a woman but his position of power ought to have been taken into consideration when sentencing.

What you have to understand is that crimes against property is the ultimate sin in English law,

As he is unlikely to re offend and has already incurred substantial legal fees , the sentence is harsh enough. Would anyone have pursued this case if he was not famous . ?

I don't think that's quite true as it is still a crime..they would take a statement and may speak to the persons involved I doubt very much if someone had reported they had been sexually harassed the police would laugh in their face.

I think this. In that era people did touch... Look at things like the Benny hill sketches or the carry on movies x

I remember the guys at the fairgrounds giving the girls a feel as they helped them in and out but people weren't crying sexual assault.

totally agree! different era! there were girls at the school I attended who would do what ever it took to get on TOP's or get back stage with a Bay city roller, D_nny Osmond or the like! on Saturday Nights they'd be aloud into the local night club and were determined to pull or to be pulled and not one over 16 or 18

And What about the one who claims to have been groped by him and yet point blank refuses to go to the police?! She is now selling her story?!

So how will this work in Chams of an evening when there's I would suggest a lot of inappropriate groping going on? You know the no means no rule, will management now have to call the police if you complain and if you don't are you condoning it?

Don't get me wrong I won't condone sex crime but some how the lines have become blurred because unless every individual says what you've just done to me is a crime and reports it as such how can it be.

How much groping goes on at the office party etc.

cynic in me says what pay off are they now expecting?

Your right i think the justice system is having a laugh!....that stupid woman said nothing for twenty years......sat and watch his first trial and said nothing...then because he said the women that were giving evidence against him were lying she thought she would open her mouth and come up with this stupid story, its a piss take, it should be her that gets locked up

You get charged under the laws at the time of the offence I.e. 1995 laws with 1995 sentencing policy. Bearing in mind the flurry of cautions now being handed out going back to 1995 then it's probably about right. Had he done it last week then maybe got more

While there's an element of truth in the fact that the culture 20 or 30 years ago was different I don't see how that excuses it.

Ultimately what he did was wrong, a common theme of all the allegations against him was that they were people he was in a position of influence over - be that age or influence and that is bullying.

With regards to the sentencing, I think it's fair, it certainly didn;t deserve a custodial. I think community service might have been more fitting as it may have taought him some humility something that was lacking in his statement after his sentencing earlier today.

On the basis of the specific allegation the sentence is fair. As much as the AG is considering a referral, i would be surprised if the appeal court found it unduly lenient.

Don't forget along with the suspended sentence he will be on the sex offenders register which in itself is punishment.

A previous poster mentioned that he was sentenced under the law applicable at the time of the offence, therefore the sentence is perhaps different than it would be now.

Huge degree of sensitivity around sex offences at the moment, and for good reason post saville etc, and I'm not suggesting for one minute that the case shouldn't have come to court as if there was a reasonable prospect of conviction then it rightly should have done, but, i do get concerned that media hysteria may actually hamper those victims who are still trying to muster the courage to make a complaint.

The 'gay' card is a strong card, I dunno... I have seen many gays being touchy feely to girls, it's common, acceptable..I'm not sure either.
