Yes as garages have cctv and record licences of unpaid petrol.

I'd be tempted not to but the garages have cc tv so would have the cars reg when they realise

This has happened to me before. I didn't realise until ten days later when I was doing my books. It was from a garage I used daily and they hadn't said anything when I had filled up there after.

I just left it as I thought it was more trouble than it was worth. It was only £20.

Wait for them to contact you, though, - don't feel too sorry for those impoverished oil people!!!

"Yes as garages have cctv and record licences of unpaid petrol."

In the last two years I have had over £8000 stolen from my business it appears I'm a very nasty man for letting people have a months grace before they don't pay and I mustn't chase those poor people

Not directly connected but I know what I would do and what I have done let your conscience decide

That said I appreciate your sandwich probably cost more than the petrol you bought

"fuel was 40 pounds tho"

It's up to you, you may get a knock on the door or they may not be able to pinpoint that it was you.

If it's a garage you use regularly they may just wait until the next time you come in. They might just write it off, it's not a massive amount.

It's not really stealing if it was an honest mistake. It's up to you how you deal with it now you've realised.

i often dont check the receipt (i know i should) just shove it in my purse- so i wouldnt have realised at all if the amount was wrong - this could work either way for or against - if i had realised and was my regular place i would wait until i went back and mention it

In Your Bush

Happened to me once. I went back at the end of the day and paid it. The woman on the till was chuffed to bits. I guess she would have got it in the neck if her till didn't balance.

For it to be theft or a making off offence, there has to be criminal intent. However, now that you know about it, an omission to act would probably fulfil the mens rea of the crime.

Personally, I'd pop round with some money. You were going to spend the money there anyway, so you are no worse off than if it had gone through in the normal way.

Oh look at you all mens rea, you'll be actus reus next, and s.1 of the Theft Act 1968 lol.

You do look good in a wig though.

I would pay up after all you had the fuel and you know you havnt paid im sure you will feel better inside doing the right thing.

Whilst on hoiday last year we had dined in a restaurant we paid our bill with exact money however the waiterer came and placed change on our table belonging to some other customers who had left. It was nearly 15 euros.

I handed straight back to waiter and said its not ours. Maybe we were silly but i knew it wasnt ours and felt good about myself for doing it
