the good lands, the bad lands, the any where you may want me lands

Save a horse today? pick up some horse meat steaks. Any views on the suggestion to reduce the suffering to our large population of horses currently neglected and suffering, by legal slaughter and introduction to the UK meat trade for human consumption?

Depends entirely if you mean literally or metaphorically.

You'd be surprised how many guys on here describe themselves as a Horse ; )

I don't think it will really help, like all meat producers you want horses that have a lot of good meat on them in the first place, all the unwanted racehorses and rescue cases wouldn't be suitable. They would have to bring in horses that are bred for meat, then all the fluffies would be up in arms and start 'resucing' them too!!

By that same ideology, you could also introduce cat and dog meat for general consumption.

Sadly, you have more chance of successfully marketing 'Soylent Green' to the majority.

We think more of domesticated 'pet' animals than we do of our own species.

at present horses and particular ponies have no value at the bottom end of the market. By use they regularly get dumped in farmers fields and the owners no longer want them and cant sell them. I know people have dumped their ponies in the new forest with the wild forest one but all this does is introduce disease and upset the herd balance so not the best idea.

i can see why it was suggested as it would be a way of giving these unwanted ponies some sort of value to stop this neglect etc but this country need education more on their plight to tell people why it was suggested rather than just saying "right, lets eat horse to increase its value!" which to the unknowing means nothing and sounds horrendous!!

Not really, its people treating horses like children that got us into this mess in the first place!!

For example..... Mrs joanna blogs has a nice, friendly, plod along called daisy, daisy gets old or has an injury that means she'll never be ridden again. So Mrs joanna blogs thinks ' oh let's have a foal!! How lovely!!' so they bred with a cheap stallion with no grading or good breeding history for a few hundred quid and out pops a foal with no breeding that they can't handle that no body wants to buy. Times that buy about a million

...Up on the Downs

It is already legal to slaughter horses and eat them, horse meat is available in the UK, just not that popular?

The Americans campaign against slaughter, but sometimes it is definitely the kinder option. My priority is always to avoid suffering, not preserve life at all cost, but I would need much more information to comment on any new proposal.

SEA

Do you really want to eat animals which are not tested and may contain all types of medication. Medication such as bute could have serious side affects - plus they are such graceful animals ??

Horses are magnificent creatures - probably the original 'mans beat friend' - or woman's best friend if you were Catherine the Great.

Imagine life without them - no Cheltenham, no Hollywood westerns, no crops in days of old + fewer sore bottoms!

It's actually quite a tasty meat, it will never replace our normal joint but when on holiday and its on the menu I'll indulge.
