Up North :-)

After all that has happened recently should a police force be routinely armed?

Half of them are armed these days. How many have been shot who were innocent? Its worse than giving a kid a dangerous toy giving a peeler a gun!

Just a thought. Maybe we should encourage ordinary criminals to carry guns at all times, we might then get a better police response.

dream on.

Run a red light or speed and they are well up for it. They do like to shoot Brazilians on the tube though!

No I wouldnt arm the Police force.

Many of them wouldnt want to be armed either. Plus if the crims know the Police are routinely aremed it could escalate them carrying firearms.

They do a very tough job but recent events are thankfully very rare.

mmmmm I think it helps to have armed police in the places where people know of the dangerous criminals im not slagging off anywhere at all! but just saying it does help to have um in the big places, etc,,,but suppose in the small places it can get rather frightening at times etc.

simple fact is that firearms and police do not mix.

police should not carry weapons, when they require an armed response they should use the military (infantry marksmen).

the basic reason for this is that police, because of the nature of their police duties, cannot spend the time required to make target identification second nature. the proof of this is in the number of unjustified police killings (taking into account, numbers of armed police/troops and their deployment with authorization to use firearms) there are compared to the number of unjustified military killings in NI during the troubles.

think they should just have a few armed police up north in the event of someone letting the grimness get to them. Apparently it is grim past Watford not that we have ever ventured there as we dont have an armed escort.

it must be really scary for you lot with all that killing & crime going on down south?,i took a plane from heathrow a while and there were armed guards everywhere with machine guns and body armor!.

it was 6.o am and armed police were running around every where ready to start their shift and it was really scary!,the newspaper seller at wh smith says its just another day in the beautiful south but the kids were dead frightened!.

apparently whenever a dozen people get into a bit of a crowd down south the armed response police are called in to break them up in case they start to talk to one and other?!.

Maybe my view is too simplistic, however, routinely arming police would result in more criminals carrying weapons? I think you only have to look at America to see that arming police does not work. Without going into too much detail, someone very close to me was shot and having seen first hand how much damage a gun can do I know that the less weapons out there, the better!

My view is even more simplistic.

There are too many power happy policeman as it is. Imagine how trigger happy the same policemen will be.

You don't fly much do you?

There are armed police at most if not all UK airports now, even little Exeter airport regularly has armed officers with those machine gun thingies walking around.

"After all that has happened recently should a police force be routinely armed?"

the police would not need to carry guns if the criminals did not have them

nowdays the police are far too soft on bank robbers etc

when they catch them they should give them one almighty belt round the ear , that would make them think twice and stop it overnight

For areas where gun crime is an issue, then perhaps the Police force in those particular areas should be routinely armed.

Generally speaking, the majority of the UK doesn't have a gun problem. For example, having previously lived in Manchester myself, there isn't a day that goes by without some gun-related incident, usually involving gangs and organised criminals. Sadly, innocent people do fall victim from time to time.

Don't you just think if the law all carry guns then the bad guys will only get bigger guns. I think what we have right now works well.
