Off my bike

I only recently learnt to cycle and yesterday evening went to the local park with my friend to practise turning corners because I'm rubbish.....

We got to a straight, I tried to pedal a little faster and at some point lost confidence in my footing, forgot that I had breaks and fell off my bike...leaving bits of my left hand and knee on the ground...right by the kids playground...big, undignified, ouchie-ness!!!

There go my Tour de France dreams!!

Good job you did it slowly, gravel rash at 20 mph plus is fucking painfull.

Learn to relax when crashing, you bounce better.

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

I used to cycle everywhere as a kid, then moved to a city and basically forgot. Last time I got on a push bike I was terrified, forgot I had brakes and crashed into a wall. Shanks pony for me!

Hope the wounds heal quickly, dont use plasters, keep them moist.

How did you learn to ride at your age?

Is it the same as when your a kid? Someone runs with you, lets go and shouts 'Pedal pedal pedal'?

You need an emergency bag with some wound wipes, magic cream, Mr Bump plasters and lollipops.

It'll make it all much better.

I'm pretty sure that Birmingham Council offer adult cycle training for free. It's well worth doing not just for the basics but also for road craft and confidence

Know how you feel fella.

Went on my bike yesterday for the first time this century, and what feels like half of the last one. Although I didn't fall off, I did come close a few times.

Just a thought, why not get one of those padded sumo suits. You wont get hurt when you fall off next time.

I might just look into that ... I'm not sure I'll ever ride on the roads... Parks, easy trails and the countryside are my aims.... Nonetheless, i could do with becoming much more competent!

No pain no gain. I'm learning to be a submissive. I quite like a little bruising from the whips and paddles

Get a grown-up to put stabilisers on your pushbike for you (and make sure you say please and thank you)

Thank you.

I was well proud when I first got my balance... It's a long road ahead (pardon the pun), but I'm determined to keep going.... Not rush myself... I have bought a pair of gloves, and knee pads...lol

Take the training as it is not all about road riding, it is about building confidence.

You're very right. I've found something that looks interesting:

Well done you for learning to cycle, I tried to teach my mother a few years ago but she has no sense of balance so we had to abandon that idea

I think you have done really well! My stepmother has recently bought a bike (they like spending money) But I don't think she has got further than buying it, though she was adamant that she was going to start with stabilisers...so we'll see, but a big thumbs up to you

Crashing happens to the most experiences cyclists. I'm into mountain biking and regularly throw myself down steep hills for fun without hurting myself but I have had 2 crashes in the space of a month. The first was on my way to the start line of the Prudential Ride London 100 and I still did the ride. The 2nd was mountain biking in the lakes a few weeks ago. I fell off some raised boards into some stagnant water. I'm still riding. It's all part of the fun. Don't let it knock your confidence.

Just thought I'd let you know OP

Aldi have a promotion on today for cycling equipment and clothing.

If you are going to get into it, you can pick up some good bargains
