Just thinking what is wrong with a short first message.? When you meet someone face to face do you talk without a reply for five minutes.. X

The problem with messages like 'how are you?' or 'Want to chat?' or 'what you upto?' or 'great pictures' or 'skype?'etc, etc, etc isn;t that they are short but totally uninspiring.

Short messages are fine as long as they are worth reading!

Lol, it's different when it's someone you know. Or is that a double standard?

No it isn't a double standard, a short message from someone you know is in context and part of an ongoing conversation. Same goes for a one line or even one word PM from a forum thread, it becomes acceptable as it is a component.

But an introduction letter / pm needs to grab attention somehow. Nice tits is not generally a good start

No but if you want to get someone's attention you have to realise its not a face to face meeting on here.

There is a difference between a short first message and a one liner like 'how are you' or 'nice pics'.

Depending on the content a short message can grab your attention or make you laugh. It gives you something to work with.

A 'how are you' or similar is dull and instantly forgettable amongst all the other one liners. Can't remember ever replying to a first message like that, they just get deleted.
