Having seen the film and then watched the documentary the other night on bbc2 words, cannot describe how angry i am with the sheer arrogance of the catholic church and the way the behaved in the 50's and since then....... To those who know what i am talking about(would take to long to vent my true feelings on here), what are your views... Not so much as an apology from the church...

Try getting hold of the Magdalen Sisters too which I watched a long time ago but I just happened to have watched Philomena last night.

Its beyond disgusting how these women and children were treated

I watched it, its truly awful.

My mom was made to go into a catholic run mother and baby home in Warwickshire in 1966. She was only 16. She told me that they were treated like slaves having to scrub floors etc when they were heavily pregnant. The nuns were awful to them. The nun that was with her as she was giving birth was evil. She was made to give my sister up at 6 weeks but thankfully this was to a foster family only and she did eventually get her back when she was 6 months after my grandparents relented and my mom and dad married.

Ironically, my grandad who made the decision to put my mom in the home etc was brought up in a catholic childrens home and was subjected to abuse from the age of 5 to 14. The home in question was Father Hudsons Home in Coleshill, Birmingham and the abuse that occurred there has since been well documented.

The catholic religion has a lot to answer for.

I've watched Philomena and a friend recommended Magdalen Sisters so will watch that then.

I felt so sad for the way those girls were treated in Philomena and to know it's true , made it all the worse. Although if you look at what happened in Rotherham / horrid things still happen and are covered up by those in authority. Philomena is a very thought provoking film.

As a lad I was 'educated' by nuns some of the time, they were by and large devoid of any warmth or feelings of anything other than the regime implemented by the system they belonged to..

looking back on it what was the normal chastisement for when we erred or gave voice to our thoughts which did not conform to their doctrine I would now say it was abuse above and beyond what was necessary or in fact required..

the fact that over 800 children's skeletal remains were discovered in just one of their establishments is truly shocking..

the state were equally responsible for the vile abuse and not only the Irish state..

shameful and so sad..

It is more the fact that the catholic church will not say sorry that enrages me. That and the fact that these homes knew that children and mothers were trying to find each other but did nothing....

So how do you all feel about the British government that was sending children off to Australia up until the 1970's?

my gran was brought up in a work house because my great granny was a single mum, until she met and married my grandad so its not just catholics who have done bad things in the past.
