What did you do before credit cards?

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

The pay thread and Gay Abandon (aka Caz) mentioned the Access card.

When did you get your first credit card?

What did you do before such accessible credit?

Are you one of the rare "never had one" breed?

Don't know when I first got one.

Never use mine just my debit card as I get cash back on certain purchases.

Would only use a credit card in extreme circumstances. I'm not really one for credit if I haven't got the money I don't buy it simple

It's not just about the credit though. For larger items you get the added consumer protection.

I use my credit card all the time as I get vouchers back. I pay it off every month and have those lovely vouchers to spend too.

Still not had a credit card. Prefer to keep track of everything in just a couple of accounts.

Think I might get one to improve my credit rating if I do want to sort something out later

Prior to having my flexible friend, if I couldn't afford it, I either didn't get it or occasionally bought things on HP or rented (I'm pretty sure I didn't own a telly until the mid 90's although I had my own house and a mortgage in 1986)...as I said on the other thread, I now swap cards to get the 0% deals and recently transferred approx £3k debt over to a 36 month deal and set up a DD...I'm not stupid with my cards, but if I can get what is basically a 3 year interest free loan, then I'm gonna use it

Nothing about a right or wrong way just a statement of the consumer protection facts. Not all debit cards provide the protection but all credit cards do.

It's not an argument.

Do theatres only employ blonde bimbo's in the sales offices these days?

I rung them up and asked if they had wheelchair access.

"Yes" she said, "we take all debit and credit cards".

Lickety, is it fair (or still relevant)to add that some/most consumer protection only kicks in for credit card spend on items/purchases over £100.

Although i understand that it still applies if you have only paid a deposit, say £10, towards a £100+ purchase.

My first card was an Access Card, got it when I paid my first grant check into the TSB in Sept75. Credit limit £200!

Now only use credit card when buying on line and I have a special pre paid card for that, that I charge with however much I am spending...

No ones going to get access to my bank accounts and clear me out!

Rule 75 of the 1974 Consumer Credit Act!

For any purchase made between £100 and £30,000 on a credit card you have the added protection of being able to claim back your money from the credit card company in the event of the retailer going bust, goods not arriving, not arriving as they should or being damaged. Useful if the retailer is no longer there!!!

You only have to spend £100 - so can use a credit card for a deposit on a car, holiday or expensive item - pay the rest however you want - and still be able to claim the full amount back from the card company. If you've hot the cash just pay off the card next day!

Google any story of a travel firm going bust and spot the difference between those who paid cash or by debit card, and those who paid by credit card.

The latter got their money back.

If I want to hire a car in Australia I have to have a credit card. They won't accept cash or a debit card. It was the same when hiring a car in Florida.

And both times I booked in the UK prior to the trip yet they still insisted I used my cc.

I have one for anything I buy on the internet or any big purchases over £100 as your purchase is protected that way.

I never have a balance as I have a DD set up with my bank to pay the full amount owing every month.

It is more for protection that I use it as I don't want to use my debit cards or bank account details on the net.
