Is the UK just one country?

Watching the news and Ed Milliband kept saying "our country" and "keeping our country together".

Surely the UK is 4 countries, or are they just states?

well Scotland doesn't exists any more last night just gave away all rights we ever might have had to call ourselves a country , we are just dependant on the sneering good will of westminster , it will be along time before they stop laughing at us that's for sure

We are the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland isn't part of Great Britain but it is part of the United Kingdom.

At least it confuses foreigners for a laugh

Neither.

The 'state' is the entirety of the 4 nations. Miliband is using 'country' as synonymous wit 'state', and not necessarily incorrectly.

Considering that yesterday was the second referendum on the subject that scotland has had, i sincerely doubt that the matter has died a death because the people spoke against it in this instance. The results from this are, if i am not mistaken, only binding for 15 years before another referendum can be called.

No one is laughing or sneering. I'm am just delighted the Scots have stayed in the Union. The Scots have contributed to the Great in Great Britain and we are all better for it.

I dont think Cameron, Clegg and Milliband should have bent over and took it up the arse with the concessions they have made to the Scots. They should have let them make their choice with out the bribery from the 'bank of mum and dad'

I'm very sorry that you feel that way. I respect that you feel very strongly on this issue and hope that at some point you can see the positive. In fact, something rather amazing happened yesterday, and that would've been amazing which ever way the vote swung.

Wales is a province of England, just the same as British Columbia is not its own country but a province of Canada. The UK consists of two countries (England and Scotland) and then Northern Ireland.

think there was an air of panic about and sometimes making decisions on the hoof especially ones that they don't necessarily have a mandate for are just a 'cheque in the post' guarantee..

I don't think they probably made a lot of difference to how most voted, certainly not 10% worth in any case..

Scots are not that silly to be brought off with hollow promises from 3 'clones' from down south..

And may I add that, although some people think it was a waste of time, the No voters must feel pretty empowered from this.

The party leaders should not have unilaterally offered 'extra powers' to Scotland without putting it before Psrliament, which is why some backbenchers are up in arms about it - and rightly so, the Primacy of Parliament is not to be messed with.

I'm not opposed to Scotland gaining more control over her affairs but - and this is vitally important - these powers must also be granted to the rest of the UK.

Scotland cannot be treated as a special component otherwise all this will rear up again, but it will be England that kicks open the secession box.

England has a unique democracy deficit in that it is the only Nation in the Union not to have devolved powers and where MP's from the other Nations can implement laws that do not affect their own constituents.

That has to change.

One unexpected result of this referendum has been the awakening of English Nationalism.
