Just been out to look for a kitten and there is a buzzing and the grass is covered in the crane flies !!

Not enough legs, they have 6.

Eat grass roots as grubs for a year then pop out of the lawn for a shag ... Destroy lawns .. Horrid things.

I was going to say that they're crane flies in my case but aren't indeed daddy long legs, however double checking they can be classed as such
