I've just paid for my car tax due from 1st October,I'm not going to get a new tax disc.

Due to the new rules that come out this October 2014

It's going to be really weird driving without that disc in my car,

My question how will you feel not having that disc showing!

I'm going to feel very vulnerable - and worried my windscreen might break.

the car disc holder people will have to find something else!! lol save me about half hour trying to blooming get the old one out... and the new one in... especially weird for me as because I don't pay road tax (hippy car) the disc was the only thing reminding me of when i would roughly ish get my renewal letter.....

The fact that you wont be able to sell the tax with your vehicle when the new rules come into effect are going to catch a few people out as well.

Don't you have to register your car, not just pay your tax now?

Not really something that worries me.

It's only really something I ever think about when I have to renew it.

The funny thing is, my tax disc is right in front of me as my car is left hand drive.

I don't pay a great deal of attention to it though, as I'm far too busy looking out through the windscreen

It wont be weird for me driving as I have a right hand drive like most others and the tax disc goes in the bottom left of the windscreen.

Its not going to bother me

Won't bother me. The only difference is I won't have the disc on the windscreen, and that's it.

Is it an offense to keep the old one there? I'm a creature of habit.

I think mostly its a good idea the only reservation is noting if some ones disk is out of date and the general public reporting people avoiding paying road tax.

"Is it an offense to keep the old one there? I'm a creature of habit. "

Well, obviously the 'Failure to display a valid tax disc' offence will no longer be applicable, however, I have not been able to determine if it will be an offence to continue to display a tax disc after 1st October, whether it is valid or not - although from the information I have found on the DVLA website, it would seem that the actual paper disc itself becomes invalid on 1st October.

Here's an extract from DVLA.

From 1 October 2014, the paper tax disc will no longer need to be displayed on a vehicle. If you have a tax disc with any months left to run after this date, then it can be removed from the vehicle and destroyed. This includes customers with a Northern Ireland address, however they will still need to display their MoT disc.

From 1 October, when you buy a vehicle, the vehicle tax will no longer be transferred with the vehicle. You will need to get new vehicle tax before you can use the vehicle.

If you sell a vehicle after 1 October and you have notified DVLA, you will automatically get a refund for any full calendar months left on the vehicle tax. The refund will be sent to the name and address details held on DVLA records.

The same as you got for the last year apart from a circular paper disc.

DVLA are going to do very nicely from the double tax each time a vehicle is sold. Plus big brother will now be able to track your every move with their ANPR cameras- funny how we've not heard a peep about if this data is stored or how else it might be used.

I think it is a good idea in principle. I have had the tax disc nicked from my motorbike a few times! Some bastard even unbolted the titanium holder as well!

"

but this refund you will get, will it be from the actual day you sell the car, or will it be only full months paid back???

at the moment, if you sell a car on the first of the month and claim the money back, you only get the money from the start of the following month.

so is this yet another stealth tax from the government ??? can see them making millions from this

How do you work that out. On the sale of a vehicle, remaining road tax will automatically be refunded to the seller - Saves the seller the bother of having to apply for it.

You do still need to display a valid disc till the end of this month so unless you're waiting for an October disc you should still have received one.

Personally it'll make my job easier... I work in the motor trade and it can be a right pain tracking discs down sometimes or knowing if a car was sold with tax on screen. ANPR technology has been in use for some time now so realistically not much will change for most people, and a monthly direct debit to pay is much easier for me to budget for than 6/12mths at once.

You only get full months refunded so the seller will have paid for tax until the end of the month of the sale, which won't be refunded and the buyer will have to tax the car too. Effectively tax will be paid twice for the month of sale on any car sold.

Because they only refund any whole months unused, and regardless of when you buy, it's backdated to the beginning of the month. So if you sell/buy mid month, the seller loses 2 weeks and the buyer has to pay for two weeks they haven't used and DVLA pockets an extra month's tax

havent bothered displaying a tax disk on my bikes for over 10 years now, just keep it under the seat.

Going back to the changes how many people are aware that if you buy a car after 01 Oct that any tax on it will be automatically refunded back to the seller and that you as the buyer are immediately responsible for taxing it ?
