Bradford

With the parties promising a shit load of stuff to the Scots to keep them in the Union, people are calling for countries to have their own powers.

This is a headline from today's Yorkshire Post..."Yorkshire lists its demands as Cameron offers ‘no’ vote prize"

Do you think that the countries of England should take charge of their own affairs? Or maybe just 1 assembly for 'up north'?

It's a nice idea but it would just create more bureaucrats and jobsworth's if it could be done whilst reducing the number of civil servants I would be in favour of more local control.

My dining room is calling to be made an independent republic whilst the remainder of the house wishes to be an empire

I am sort of in favour of local control and local government BUT as someone else has mentioned that involves duplication and more bureaucracy, and even worse it creates MORE POLITICIANS!

in the night garden

I think we should devolve further.

I want to govern myself. Possibly my street. I will be a firm but fair leader and will be adored by my subjects. We will raid other streets and occupy them. Soon I will be the ruler of a town. Then a dictator of a county. Then the country and the world hahahahahahahhahahhaaaaa and then I will kill the French.

It doesn't need a new northern assembly. City regions e.g. West Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside, North East already have Combined Authority arrangements in place for local decision making (made up from the local authorities who, whether you're a fan or not, are at least democratically elected). Devolution of funding for some things e.g. infrastructure, economic development to these bodies would at least be a start.

The promise to devolve decisions about Air Passenger Duty to Scotland has the potential to shaft Newcastle airport - just one example of how the North of England could potentially be worse off whatever the outcome of the Scottish referendum.

Just the same as the Scottish issue, I don't get where ALL people living in one geographical area can have their political needs met by the same council/parliament/government. It's inevitable that many people will always be dissatisfied with those in charge because they don't serve their interests. This is why I think Alex Salmond is a fraud, his white paper is trying to be all things to all people. Spending bonanza and massive tax cuts.

This notion of an all powerful local government is a nonsense. If we had greater devolution to the English regions you'd still have discontent.

Glasgow (for now)

The specific issue that needs addressing is the West Lothian Question.

Where scottish MP's can vote on purely English and Welsh legislation.

As a scot I find it hypocritical and would bar Scots MP's voting on purely English and Welsh matters.

Back in 2004 there was a referendum on devolution for the North East of England.

It was voted down by 77% of the vote.

It my be time to look at root and branch reform of the Westminister system and devolving more powers to all regions of the UK.

And yes, I'm voting No.
