FabSwingers.com forum: Any ideas to increase the interest in the forums and encourage more posters?

Mentioned in another thread - this is a huge site, with 1000s of members, but only 1% of us post on a regular basis.

We love bulletin boards/forums, and would like to see more posters here. Any ideas? What about showing post counts, or having a new post feature? Perhaps management could run some competitions for members?

Generally if people want to use a forum they will... if people want to read but not post they will. If people just want to wank off on cam or at pics or try and find a quick shag (unless the comp' prize is a shag)they won't be interested in the forums.

I'm with polo on this one.... different people use different parts of the site...

for example, I use the forum but don't use the directing chatroom because it does nothing for me... or the general chat because i find it goes too fast and is just a tad clicky for me...

you can't "make me" use those parts... just like you can't make people use the forums.....

all you can say is that the site does provide the tools to make it work for them... if people decide not to use a part of that then that is up to them...

however the one thing that does get my goat is using one part of the site to complain about another because I don't that is constructive at all....

I am all for people using the forum and would encourage people to do so, but in the end it is up to them to decide if they want to do that, no one else.....

up to a point I would agree... however there are only so many times a week people can talk about "bareback" or "timewasters" or "replying to mail" for example or it would be very stale.....

maybe it is a case of suggesting people use the "quick link" search forum topic link in the top corner... or reading the FAQ's and then maybe newbies would find out how often they do come up...

maybe it is just me, but I did loads of backreading so I knew what to expect before stepping in, and now people tend to just jump in with both feet and see if they sink or swim....

i agree that suggesting something positive about where they can find similar discussions is far friendlier than the comments which can follow. Now everyone is savvy enough to find info on a busy site, and some wont bother to look, and some responses would have certainly put me off ever contributing again if Id been on the receiving end.

Good point- seen this elsewhere too - newbies don't know all the wrinkles, and caustic replies to old chestnut posts, telling them to use the search function, can be very disencouraging.

Re a couple of the replies above - we were'nt in any way trying to coerce people to post, just asking are there ways the forum can be tweaked to encourage more activity. Certainly a 'new posts since your last visit' function, covering all the forums, seems to work well on other boards we use.

In no way are we complaining about this forum or site - we like it a lot, and are delighted that there is somewhere we can talk and read about our hobby.

I've been here a few months. Before posting I did as Fabio said, some back reading to guage the forums.

All form of life is here, and amongst the usual topic threads are some real gems, but it can be hard work sometimes as they often get hijacked by people attention seeking to get others to flatter them in some shape or form, and threads often read like their PMs.

If you're a newbie it must be difficult to contribute to that, so lurke and leave them to it.

It would be nice to get some fresh blood in and get differing views, but if people don't feel comforable or simply don't want to then it's down to the regulars to keep the board alive with their threads wishing us a good morning...every morning, informing us of what they had for breakfast etc!

first off fully agree with _abio about the chat rooms. have tried them on several occassions and like most of my meesages im still waiting for replies.

another thing that i find annoying about forum, is when there is an intersting post, it seems to get hijacked and goes way off thread, tighter topic control maybe the answer.

as to 'old sweats' v 'newbies', some of us who have been in here a while do see repeated topics, but to newbies it a fresh and in many cases valid question, that is very often treated with disdain, try to remember you were once a newbie, have a little patience, please

most forums attached to websites of any kind only attract a tiny % of the user base. 1% even, is good.

The real problem with people coming to the forums for the first time is that they see what actually looks like a very close knit clique. And if they make a post and end up with members of that clique shooting them down, well, they won't come back. Simple. The "I lived without this and can carry on like that" drive is very strong indeed.

A simple thing would be to add say... a postings count next to your name... That increases so clearly you'd then get some idea of the newbies and old hands... So if 'Billy Willy' appears with 12 posts you'd cut them some slack compared to 'Fannie Annie' with 1756 posts... only an idea... but a simple one?

Like I'm setting up a private location for adult prties and gang bangs,had a great response from couples and single guys as its like playing at a club but half the cost!

People go on about newbies being put of posting because they get shot down for asking a stupid question (which has been asked repeatedly before... sometimes still on the first page – two or three times)... but people rarely mention when a newbie posts and the next 20 replies are from a small number of people telling private jokes and playing who's head of the sycophant society. How does that look to a newbie? How do you join in when it ‘appears’ a clique has just taken over your post?.... and no I am not saying people shouldn’t be allowed to flirt and have a bit of banter… it’s about self control and avoiding excess.

You can’t wrap everyone up in cotton wool… and even if you could… would you really want to?

Just on an extra note whilst I think of it…. the newbie posters who piss me off are the ones who post a moan as their first post and then fuck off - not even waiting to see who replies. The forum isn’t just a dumping point!

I think we'd all like to make the forums more welcoming and accessible - not compulsory, but sufficiently 'better' to entice lurkers who are currently wavering about posting.

Back when 'new chat' was introduced, Admin did say that upgrading the forums was 'next'(ish)

So, in anticipation of that, there is a useful exercise in identifying what we'd like to see, particularly around enticing the 'willing but cautious'.

For example:

A FAQ forum that is compulsory reading before first post. this would also contain a new and improved glossary.

Splitting threads that go off on a tangent, so that the tangent doesn't obscure the question.

Delete post option and edit post option not to be temporary.

Better quote functionality.

Reputation points to differentiate between useful contributors and...not!

Not post counts, they just encourage spamming.

(These are just initial ideas...some will be very bad for some reason I haven't thought of!)

I am fairly new and do post on the forums now and agan. However if im honest a lot of people on the forums have a really bad attitude towards other peoples posts sometimes. If someone is new and posts something looking for advice, rather than trying to be helpful, some people just prove to be arrogant sarcastic old twats. You may think you're being hilarious and those who are your 'friends' tend to jump on the bandwagon and try and make the o.p out to be an idiot, which i have seen many times on here. Maybe a slightly more friendly, helpful approach would encourage more people to post as , quite frankly, some of you do come across as sad bitter people at times

We were discussing swinging websites the other day and apart from a few people saying that FAB forums can appear cliquey, Nicky said that if FAB was the first swinging website we went on, the responses given would have put her off swinging for life(i.e. When a newbie asks a question the response given).

Although many regular forum users may get a little 'jaded' with the - good morning - would you fuck the person above - snog the person below type threads, they are harmless and (usually) non-confrontational easy topics for new forum users to cut their teeth on.

They encourage new forumites to dip their toe in the water without having to think too hard about what they will post or whether said post will be ripped to shreds.

They may be boring and banal to many regular posters but it's an easy in for the newbies, they gain confidence, get known and very often they get a little bit of a flirt and a rapport going with others which I think is all to the good. xxx

This is quite true oh soapy one, ponder on how many people wake up alone and have no good-morning greeting?

I know I only used to have my dogs woof and wag of tails in the morning or a grunt from my pre-pubescent son.

So for many, who do not go out working or are confined to the house for whatever reason, it is that little touch of human warmth.

I know personally there have been times I've been glad to come onto the forum and feel there is someone out there to bid me good morning or goodnight. Or give me a virtual hug. xxxx

see.... the problem i see is the problem that most forums have...

without the regulars what type of forum would you have.... a very quiet one....

would a quiet forum attact new people... no....

catch 22....

I think what is forgotten in the rush for newbies sometimes is that regulars like it or not are the lifeblood to all forums.....

in the rush for new blood just remember not to chuck the existing ones under the bus.....

I don't think anyone wants to chuck anyone under the bus (well maybe some lol) but people should be a little more tolerant of newbies as we all had to start somewhere.

Have had some great chats with oldies and newbies alike but would never judge.

see you hit upon the same thing as you did, I did.. and sassy did..... which was to stand back... and take it in before stepping in so you had a feel for what the forum was like

now like i said it feels like people are just jumping in with both case.. and that is not the best set up because its then a case of sink or swim....

I hate first post moans and whinges as you only get one chance to make a 1st impression......and I don't think that shows any respect for the forum (like others have said.. using it as a dumping ground)

for example, I use the forum but don't use the directing chatroom because it does nothing for me... or the general chat because i find it goes too fast and is just a tad clicky for me...

you can't "make me" use those parts... just like you can't make people use the forums.....

all you can say is that the site does provide the tools to make it work for them... if people decide not to use a part of that then that is up to them...

however the one thing that does get my goat is using one part of the site to complain about another because I don't that is constructive at all....

I am all for people using the forum and would encourage people to do so, but in the end it is up to them to decide if they want to do that, no one else....."

I found the chat rooms too hard, like you said too fast, plus its too small and i lost who i was supposed to be talking to, a whole world passing me by but hey ho, plenty of people on the forums so who needs the chat

Start somewhere? Start somewhere with what?

They are human beings are they not... they have communicated with other human beings before have they not? Then what’s the big deal?

Think of it this way.... if you walked into a pub you had never been to before and you could see there were some people there who looked quite at home, so must be regulars... would you walk up to the bar and announce "This pub isn't very good, you don't have enough choices of larger and I don't like the bar snacks...... now then folks make me feel welcome"

I predict the answer is "no" unless you are related to Charlie Bronson.

Joining a forum is no more complex than going out for a pint. In fact it is easier as it's just typed words on a screen... so if someone ignores you, then you don't have the embarrassment of having to walk off and find somewhere else to stand.
