A long term friendship can only be assessed over time, I am lucky enough to have 3. We meet up every New Year's Eve and have done for many years.

As I get older, sadly many are no longer here

Someone who is a friend......Someone to tell all to...and know any secrets will be kept.

A Caravan in Newent, where you can both get away from it all.

Long walks in the orchards with her dog.

Warmth at night under the duvet.

Someone who knows I'm a swinger (as she used to be) and accepts all that I do.

A gig buddy, busfest companion, theatre mate....all those things and more!

To be treated with respect that's it plain and simple . I treat none fab and fab friends with respect and compassion . Surely that's not to much to ask , is it ?????? . Unfortunately for some it was . Safe to say they are friends no longer

Know this my fab friends . If you give but receive nothing in return then forget and move on to people that Will . Never forget your true friends .

About 6 months ago I got talking to a lovely young lady at work, it started with just a couple of jokey emails but with every passing conversation it became clear to both of us that we are on the same "wavelength"' in almost everything we do. For the last 6 months not a day has gone by where we haven't spoken and she just has the ability to light up any room and any conversation just by being herself. I've discovered that it is possible for a man and woman to be friends without the complication that sex and feelings bring; in a very short space of time she's become my best friend, my soulmate.

What do I expect from her? Absolutely nothing. What do I get from her? Everything. She's he most beautiful person I've ever met and I feel lucky to have her in my life

Ive known a particular woman for some 25yrs, we've always got on well although we hold different _iews on certain subjects.

One such is religion, she is extremely religious and I am a secularist. This has led to many discussions of a robust nature which I relished as my opinions and beliefs are there to be shot at - ideas need testing if they are to stand up.

Three months ago she asked an open question on FB about religious _iews and invited comments, I posted my thoughts & took care to keep to generalities & avoided anything personal out of respect to her beliefs.

Unfortunately, she did not think the same & launched into a sneering and intensely personal attack on my life - it wasn't the first time either.

I took a little time to think & came to the unpleasant realisation that she is a smug, self-satisfied zealot & I don't actually enjoy my interactions with her.

I ended the friendship and haven't spoken to her since, although she has contacted me a couple of times which I have ignored.

Life is too short to have people around who's company and ideology makes you uncomfortable.

Its a pity but I feel no regret.

I have levels of friendship but I hope for honesty with each friend at whichever level it is at.

I have recently been in touch with an old friend I haven't seen for a few years but we picked up exactly where we left off, as if there had been no pause in our communication: that's friendship.

Over the years I've learned to temper expectations of others. So rather than say what I expect I'll say what I appreciate from friends. I like it when they tell me that they think I'm behaving like a twat without pussyfooting around. I like it when they challenge the way I'm thinking. I like it when they demonstrate they care about me. And when I'm with them I feel like we've never been apart. I have very few close friends but those I consider to be friends, I'd do everything I can to be there for them if they need me.

Been working (for the past couple of years) on the basis of not expecting anything. Just trying to give more and see what comes back. Depends a little on me though and how much I'm prepared to give!

If I wanted (not expected) anything....I'd say time. But new baby's and toddlers need their dads so I try and not begrudge them for that.

Someone that you can hang out without expecting anything from them...plus they must have a hunger for life/dream and be fun, I don't want a boring or too serious friend, have had many of those in the past they usually don't last long in my books.

A friend from my childhood was buried today.

As I was writing the card to his parents I remembered that he had witnessed one of the most humiliating moments of my life. Even as a gangly 13 year old he handled it really well and as a thoughtful friend. He never brought it up again and never made me feel foolish and more humiliated. I also believe he kept that secret (although I have no proof other than the no proof).
