Who appreciates a hand made gift? Would you pay more for a gift that has been made exactly to your specifications or rather a cheaper version from a shop?

Also would you be prepared to wait say 3 weeks for a bespoke gift?

( just a bit of research for my new possible business venture)

I love handmade things, I feel they have alot more meaning when you know hardwork and thought and effort have gone into making it and you get unique pieces, unlike a machine which just spits out copys of everything

If I ordered something handmade to my design I would be happy to wait for it to arrive.

The best gifts that I have received over the years , whether it be birthday or Christmas, have always been hand made.

For my birthday this year I got a few pots of hand made jam and at Christmas I got some hand made chocolates. They were far better than anything else I received.

As a hand made gift manufacturer, obviously I extol the virtues of bespoke over mass produced and understand fully the costing differences, given that even at 50pence an hour I can't complete with machine made plastic or resin prices.

As for the business idea, depends on your retail outlets choose them well and don't let them force your prices down too low to survive.

Good luck

I love handmade gifts and most of my Christmas decorations are what my Children made me when they were little.

Baby blankets, bootees and little hats are cute x

Didn't read the OP properly. Yes , I would be prepared to wait a few weeks for something that was made specifically for me.

If leg warmers ever make a comeback you've got my business.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I think the reality for me is quality and price point, if I am buying. Waiting isn't a problem but it's a special gift buyer who will think far enough ahead. I would also want to know delivery is guaranteed not to run late.

If it is just charming and handmade I would prefer that the giver had made it themselves.

I've always preferred handmade gifts. They're unique and tailored to your likes; if anyone wasn't willing to wait 3-6 weeks I'd be surprised.

We make personalised celebration cakes and find that a lot of people come to us because we can accomodate their requests unlike other providers. In particular our "adult" cakes do very well !

I love receiving handmade gifts and often give them. While I'm making them I like thinking about the recipient and times shared so I wouldn't be good for your business.

had a gf once go to a lot of trouble to ask me my favourite stuff. I was wonder why she was asking me about cars, food, holidays etc. She gave me a card, read the message and just said thanks. It went totally over my head until she pointed it out later that night.

Even then - I was just like, oh right, thanks.

It's always just nice to receive anything, for me..

Yes, I think most people would wait three weeks. I make Jamaican Christmas Cakes, and always have a list as long as my arm waiting for them, I also make homemade jam .

Titz Towers, North Notts

Handmade means more, but a lot of factory made stuff comes with a guarantied standard of production and it can be a trade off between staying with what you know you will get and finding it isn't as hoped.

. We made one recently where the guy gave us a photo of his partners pussy and tattoo of which he wanted a cake making. They were not swingers so we never got to see the real thing, but the cake was definitely good enough to eat

I buy a fair bit from NotOnTheHighStreet (mainly as they're one of my clients). Sadly, the people I buy for don't tend to appreciate the individuality of the gift as much as me... But my sister in law doesn't appreciate much in life anyway.

I make all sorts of gifts... I think personalised gifts, show a lot of thought. It's nice to make something with a specific person in mind.

Depends very much on the item.. yes i do generally appreciate handmade gifts more.

Just had a custom made Elsa (from Frozen) dress and cape.. cost £55 in total but it means far more than an off the shelf Disney fancy dress costume that everyone else's child will have.. Took 4 weeks to make and was a 'thank you' present to her for being so amazing lately.

Good luck in your new venture xXx
