Do you volunteer?

I've recently watched the Hairy Bikers with their revamping of Meals on Wheels. All run by volunteers and thinking what a great worthwhile job they do. I'd like to do it in the future.

In my old job I used to spend one hour a week reading with children at a primary school and my company promoted us doing it. I loved it.

I now run a community group once a week, I really enjoy it and get back so much from doing it too.

I think we should all do more and share our skills more too, I guess a bit like they do on DIY SOS - that type of thing.

Do you do any volunteering ?

Yes. Helping others is a selfish thing in many ways as we, the volunteers, get so much from it.

I do, at least a fortnight.

I read recently that Xerox pays it's employees (with full pay, benefits and job security upon return) for up to a year to go volunteer at a charity - they've placed 5 this year. Amazing idea.

A few large companies do this. More will do a week or two and some do a regular placement of 12 weeks spread across the year. The places are highly sought and the employer usually gets back a better rounded employee with new skills and knowledge.

MPs also have a commitment to volunteer although not all take it up. Civil servants can also have a volunteer week and I have had some work with me on that basis.

I volunteer at a drugs treatment centre. At the minute I'm getting used to the place, helping out on the needle exchange etc.

Once I get my DBS clearance I'm going to start doing group work.

Yes I volunteer at a charity and advise on SEN for professionals and parents. I absolutely love it when I hear turn-around stories for these kids when they have a more level educational field.

Edinburgh

I have over the years. I used to volunteer with a befriending scheme for a mental health charity. Then I was a Girl Guide leader for a few years.

I'm not doing anything at the moment but mostly cause I was involved in a charity event in April and drove from Edinburgh to Marrakech as the support crew.

There's a plan to volunteer at a homeless shelter at Christmas so maybe something will come of that.

I have done in the past. I've taken under privileged kids on week long activity holidays. And helped look after socially isolated pensioners at Christmas.

I don't at the moment as time and work commitments don't really permit it. That said I suspect thar those who know what I do for a living and understand who benefits may agree that my unpaid hours areva form of volunteering!

Odd that this thread has just appeared as I am thinking of doing some volunteer work at weekends. But I really don't know what yet. I'm tempted to help with the Samaritans as it seems like a worthy cause. But it's one of those things, where I really want to look into it to see that I'm putting my energies where I think it will do the most good.

The Samaritans is hard work. There is a lengthy training programme, it's not just a turn up and help kind of thing. And the emotional effort you have to put in is very hard. However, it is one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever done.

I volunteer in a library, and it's mostly about talking to the regular folks who come in, and providing a bit of company, many of them being elderly people who alone without much family. And a bit of pissing around with books, which I love.

Need to know basis

I am new to my area and will soon start looking at ways to help the local community. However a close relation of mine has in the past gone to Peru to volunteer in an orphanage and is now bound for Marroco to teach English to young children. I admire her enormously.

I used to volunteer at the local Nursery until I cleft uni and now sadly I don't have the time or ability to volunteer. I would like to be an IV for children in care when I have the spare time because they are so badly needed and not many around but for now I can't.

was a samaritan for a long time and a member of the training team, teaching new volunteers.

It does take a lot out of you , especially the training , since it means working most weekends and another day ( other than your shift ) helping others become sams.

It's a great cause and rewarding if you're looking for an organisation to help out

I would love to but a 60hr week making sure I am earning enough to pay masses of tax to support those on job seekers limits my time to do so.

I would have got another job simple as that I couldn't live with myself thinking I wasn't contributing excessive amounts so Billy 11:30am can still get up at that time.

Their website is good and they run regular training courses. You can register your interest online. I know it can be intense, however very rewarding. They were a lifeline for me a long time ago so I think they're a fantastic charity. Good luck wherever you decide to volunteer.

I work for a charity, although it's paid. We work a lot of hrs as our guy's don't like to see new faces. Due to this I don't have much spare time. I do my food to donate to a food bank though.

I have in the past. Set up and ran a food/clothing bank.

We did everything from supplying food, hot ready meals, clothing, help with cleaning elderly peoples homes through to advocacy. Acting as a middle man for residentrs to council etc.

Unfortunately it just became to much in the end but was an incredible 18 months.

I have one community organisation I've been heavily involved in for the last seven years. It has been frustrating and fun in equal measures and I've learned a lot too. It has been worth all the effort ro see the enjoyment it gives.
