End of putting the clocks back ?

I've though of an unexpected benefit of scottish independence. The scots are always wittering on about how they need their extra hour in bed because it's so blummin dark in the middle of winter. Once they've got their independence we can kick that one into touch and enjoy summertime all the year round.

Another thing to look on the bright side if they vote for independence. Any party that introduces BST all the year round gets my vote

Question is would it get your vote ?

Stuff the jocks and their bse or bst or whatever you want to call it

Let's stick to good old GMT!

Stands to attention with land of hope and glory playing in the background!

You do realise you won't actually get an extra hour of daylight in the winter if you don't turn your clocks back to GMT don't you?

As for BST we really don't need it here in Scotland as it stays light until midnight at midsummer anyway, I think it's more a benefit to those in the south.

Put the wall back up. Passport control go the hole hog. You want independence live with it. Your last a year. We are united for a reason, we are a small island, we need to stick together.

Together we stand, divided you fall.

Tell that to all the other small nations in the world and they will laugh in your face.

Love it when people say to "rebuild the wall" / "Rebuild Hadrians wall" to get rid of us Scots!

You do realise if "Hadrian's Wall" was rebuilt then part of England would actually be on the wrong side of the wall? (Or maybe it would be the right side!)

Put the wall back up.

then charge the English for entry into the Scottish utopia.

They'll have an extra hour of darkness,

Whilst we bathe in eternal sunlight .

Although if I'm honest,

I would really miss that hour of sunlight, between 3 and 4 in the morning, when I'm fucking sleeping.

Sometimes you've just got to let it go.

The SNP plan is to turn the clocks back to just before a quarter past one - 13.14.

Hang on ... Let's see if I have this right. BST gives us lighter Summer evenings, which are crap (love a night out when it's still light at 10pm) but also darker mornings - with GMT the sunrise in Summer months would come just after 3am .

Howabout a compromise? Do away with BST, stick with GMT, BUT.....Every night at 6pm the clocks go back two hours, giving us back our dark summer evenings. Then every morning at 6am clocks go forward 2 hours, making winter mornings lighter and ensuring that there 24 hours in the day. That way the night owls and early birds are both happy.

Now THAT is a vote winner, surely?

I have my fingers crossed Standard Life decide to relocate in Leeds 15,000 jobs from one company alone would be a great boost to which ever city they go to.

No such thing as an "extra" hour. There's the same amount of hours just the hour is at the other end of the day!!

Darker mornings, but lighter evenings.

GMT in Winter, double summer time in summer.

Sounds great to me, vote YES for lighter evenings, longer life expectancies, less rainfall and warmer temperatures!

Nope, it is amusing that the first two posts support different time structures.

My reasoning is I can cope with being one hour different to most of western Europe, but would struggle being one hour different half the year and two or none the rest of the year. is it really that difficult to change the clocks twice in 12 months?

Much less amusing that the thread degraded into "rebuild the wall! I think I have been hearing about Scottish independence for most of my adult life, and probably it was discussed for the 100 years before that too, just because we are at a point where a vote is due why the bitterness? Scotland is our neighbours, we have got on with them for centuries, can we all just pick on the French again as is right and proper.

Funnily enough there is something very strange about this business of putting clocks forward and back, joking aside.

I cannot quite see the logic of why firstly they go back at the end of october approximately 7 weeks or so fromt he winter solstice. Then we have to wait 13 weeks the other side for them to go forward again. Why don't they go forward at the beginning of march thus only 4 months of dreary darkness. Why do they inflict 5 months on us. It doesn't make sense.

Has anyone got the answer forumites ?

"October 1968 to October 1971 , I didn't realise it was for that long. "

I remember being at school and it still being dark at 9.00am on one particularly grotty morning. I would hate it for the clocks not to go back as working outside I would need to start work and finish an hour later. AS it is it`s still dark on some mornings at 7.30am and I barely have half an hour to do something when I get home at 3.30pm and before you say anything, I live in the South (Dorset)

yes but does it have to be 5 months of the year is my question ?

Why isn't it 4 months. I've never been given a satisfactory answer on that one.

We have to wait until end of march which is after the spring equinox so there are more than 12 hours day. Why isn't it end of february which would be logic. If you take the argument to it's extreme why don't the clocks go back at the end of september or mid september to be stupid and pedantic.

I find it very difficult to get up in the morning so I don't want to stop putting the clocks back. If you watch live outside broadcasts which are filmed in London, you can see it's lighter much earlier than up north, so I don't suppose it makes so much difference to the people who will end up making the decision

Until relatively recently I always wondered what the point of changing the clocks was. However since I have been rowing I have found a darn good reason for changing them. BST means we can start evening rowing earlier in the year and finish later.

As for the time of year the clocks change, it is now governed by the EU I did read something about why the dates were chosen, but cannot remember the reason.

However there is a limit on how long it is benificial to keep BST in place, as the days close in from both ends, so shortening the period on GMT (UTC) would make very little difference.
