Amsterdam again...

Planning on going to Amsterdam for the first time in November.

I've checked through a few threads but not much info on them.

Any idea of the best area to stay in, the best hotels and is it better to buy flights and hotel together or separately ?

Personally I'd go on the ferry I know planes quicker but good entertainment on the boat. As for hotels have a look at hotel rokin it's in dam square across the Rd from the royal palace. Nice place I worked there.

If you want good access to the centrum, make sure your hotel is on a tram route. The further away from centrum you are, the cheaper and better the hotels get. We're going to Amsterdam again in 3 weeks and we're staying in a lovely apartment near the station which is cheaper than a hotel room.

We've always found that booking flights and accommodation separately is much cheaper.

If your planning on going to a club try 'fata Morgana' swinging clubs over here will never look the same once u've been there

Amsterdam is a great place with all areas easily accessible via tram system. It's easy to walk around too and also the canal system runs a lot of boat trips ect.

If you stay near the town you'll be fine.

It's been a while since I was last there but I used to book hotels within walking distance of the museums. It's easy to get around Amsterdam.

The flight is short but if you've got time it might be interesting to go by train. It can't be too hard these days and I think it's only a little longer than flying.

Been a few times, if you like discovering a city then rent a bike, it's fun!! They get you from a to b, and the city is bike friendly. Stayed south west off the centre, it was very easy to get to places on our bikes. All you need is Google maps and you can't get lost anywhere.

Stayed in a hotel called La Boheme earlier this year. Cheap, comfy, on a tram route, friendly staff. Worth a look!

Been there a few time - our most recent visit was at the end of August. It's a fantastic city with a unique atmosphere. According to my pedometer we walked 13 miles in a single day! The red light area is fascinating by day but really comes alive after 7. We bought some interesting leather items from Mr B, an amazing shop in the gay district

The andaz is probably the best hotel I've stayed at for some time, if not ever. Pricey but you do get what you pay for with that place.

Trip advisor is still the best for finding places. Or use airbnb, that's a great site and can save you money for accommodation.

Make sure you take a lot of money. I was in Amsterdam for Kings day this year. I couldn't believe how expensive it had got. You are looking at nearly £5 for a pint of lager. Eating out in restaurants is not cheap either. I would recommend you book with easy jet as early as you can. The earlier you book the cheaper the flight will be. I would book the hotel separate from the flight. Look at hotel review websites. Also check how far from the centre your hotel is. I would call the centre Amsterdam central station, Leidseplein and Rembrantspleein areas. Some hotels can be quite a distance from the centre of Amsterdam. The red light area has some great bars and some good restaurants. If you are not an idiot the red light area is a safe place however never walk around the red light area at night on your own. Leidseplein and Rembrantspleein also have some good bars but are the expensive areas of Amsterdam to drink. Apparently 80% of Amsterdam police work undercover. If you ever feel unsafe shout help police at the top of your lungs. Another good tip is learn how to say nee danke je pronounced neigh dank ye which is Dutch for no thank you. You will get a lot of street dealers trying to sell you fake drugs like speed, cocaine, ecstasy (they are always fake). If you say nee dank je and carry on walking the dealers will hear your English accent as you say nee dank ye but they will assume you are a Brit living in Amsterdam and thus know the score. Avoid the bulldog bars as they are just tourist rip offs.

If you use Skyscanner, open the search dates up for the full month then you can see when's cheapest (unless your dates are set of course)

Oh, and take a good coat

This is spot on...I usually stay in hotels that are a 10-15 minute tram ride into town as they are better value for money...4 star, pool...gym etc....the closer into the centre you go, the less likely you'll be able to find an upmarket hotel at a reasonable price....if that's what you're looking for.
