Asked of me by my 14yr old grandson, that I couldn't answer.

Why do they make cars that can go 140 mph when you're only allowed to go 70? I thought about it for a while and came up with nothing

If you are looking for a practical reason - not all countries have our speed limits and cars a largely made for global use.

But it's really so the rich people can get away faster when the zombie apocalypse hits.

because when your at the lights or overtaking in a car that can do 140 it usually will get away or overtake faster than somthing that takes forever to get to 70

Some countries allow you to go 140mph? I'd kill myself

Generally I would be inclined to agree, but not necessarily always the case.

My car, for example, is electronically limited to 120mph, but dissappears like a bat out of hell.

Top speed is all down to gear ratio's

A smaller, less powerful car will be geared for better acceleration, but this will reduce the top speed.

More powerful engines have better torque so the gear ratio's tend to lean toward a higher top end.

Let's face it 5000 revs is the same engine speed whether it's a 1.0 litre engine or a 5.7 litre V8.

Hope this makes some sort of sense.

ahhh, now this is what I thought. I had half an idea. I tried to explain but I'm not very engineering minded

I quite like Top Gear. Their challenges and world trips are funny and interesting

Edinburgh

I'd only have been able to guess at it being about performance rather than top speed.

It's a really good question though.

Some parts of the German autobahn are unrestricted. I've driven at 120mph in Germany perfectly legally. Their autobahns tend to be straight for long distances.

You can take your own car on track days and then you get to get close to the top end speed limit...lots of fun

Most I did was 90 on my way home from Southend. I didn't realise I was going so fast

Mine was built for the american market - and the fastest you can go there legally, as far as I am aware, is 75.

Mine was only limited due to the tyres that were fitted as original equipment (owing to the tyre speed rating)

Other models in the range were not so restricted.

LONDON (se)

I have often wondered this myself. Most cars have german engineering and Germany has no speed restrictions on its motorways and they have less accidents. Huummmm go figure. I understand speed restrictions on built up areas but motorway restrictions seem silly unlesd really curvy

Cannock

When the 70mph speed limit was introduced here the UK was full of shit British Leyland cars which could probably only do 70mph downhill with the wind behind it.

Technology and safety in cars has now moved on a lot since those days, and there was talk of increasing the speed limit to 80 on motorways.

I was also tempted to make mention of the egos and that whole 'mine is bigger/better than yours' thing... I thought better of it though.

Only about 25% of German autobahns are unrestricted now due to concerns about accidents.
