You have slightly more choice than here, my daughters school has 2 options. 1 is vegetarian. No idea what they had as my eldest always has school dinners but we have to order 2weeks in advance!

My sons menu looks quite nice. They get a meat or vegetarian option or can have a jacket potato and filling. I'm just loving the idea of not having to make him a packed lunch anymore.

I never liked school dinners at Primary school, their mash was awful, that's why I don't like mash potato a lot.

The secondary school dinners were good but I mainly went home for my lunch break.

My son struggles eating school meals. He doesnt eat potato and there is only 2 or 3 days were pasta or rice are an option out of a 3 week menu.

As school meals are free for KS1 the school do not allow pack up. Ive asked they either allow him extra fruit or ill send him with some

That's bad! children are not going to like everything. Or school still allows packed lunches

That's bad, we are still allowed to send packed lunches. My son would never eat everything on the menu. And it says on his menu there is always bread and fruit available as well as the hot meal and pudding.

there's plenty of people that can't afford to give their kids a good decent meal each day. The reason school milk was first introduced was so the kids weren't suffering from malnutrition

Now my daughter is in secondary school it has got worse, pots of cold pasta ect.

At primary she got a proper old fashioned cooked meal. I still do an evening meal anyway.

I loved my school dinners, meat pie, and rice pudding.

Likewise, the mash was always really lumpy at my school when I was a kiddie. The other thing I used to hate was liver and bacon - the bacon just tasted like the liver, which I hated.

No choice, or very little choice, in those days. But I did like the rice pudding with jam, or jam rolypoly and custard for pudding!

My primary school dinners were amazing. I'm not sure if it's because it was a private school or whether all schools did similar meals.

Titz Towers, North Notts

I always cycled home for my snap and would sis in the easy chair, with a cup of Earl Grey and a book. It was great.

Although the dog didn't think so. She was always pleased to see me (she'd have been just as happy to see a burglar), but I felt I was getting in the way of her day.

We had 3 school canteens, one that served 'food around the world' and it was a different country each day, we had one that served pasta with various sauces and the 3rd was sandwiches/rolls/panini's etc

few vending machines around also pcked with choc, cereal bars, crisps

Breakfast was served early for those who went early enough, the bacon baps were devine!!

Yes until they are 7, my son is 9. We've never been entitled to free school dinners as I work even though I'm a single parent

it doesn't make any difference then if you've always had to pay. I always had to pay as well. But its a good benefit for the ones that have just started school

The school asked all parents to apply for Free School Meals even though we would get them anyway due to the children being young.. the only benefit i recognized to make a person elidgable was Income Support

I have a good relationship with the school and have a meeting next week. The headteacher has a soft spot for him and would never see him go hungry.

yes the working tax credits, denies them a school meal, but free to all now, in the infants.

that sounds good, my daughter goes to a great school, but the canteen all just grab and go food, she only has half an hour for lunch there.

if i didnt feed my child or denied her food she liked at lunchtime im dammed sure id get reported for neglect or something, so i think its unfair for a school to restrict this

At one point I was told he will eat when he is hungry. He wouldnt eat anything and lost weight. He is monitored closely and we will sort something together. Even if it means taking him a hot meal every day
