"Get rid of your dog, or whatever much loved pet you have in order to further a relationship with someone who does not like your pet?" If the dog got nasty and attacked I might it depends on the provocation if any.

"Just that they don't like the dog? Then no, if there are more deep rooted problems that were added to the mix then that may be different." my brother has been seeing a woman for a while now, its getting difficult for them as she wont go to his house as she don't like dogs so refuses to go, but its hard for him to go to hers as he cant leave the dog, she wants him to stay over night etc and moans when he leaves to go back to the dog, she has suggested he got rid of the dog but he wont, and she finds it really odd he would put the dog before their relationship, he's been round today for a moan, he says he cant see the relationship going anywhere because of this, i feel bad for him but i have to be honest i wouldn't leave my dogs alone while i stayed at a partners house or rehome them either, he said everyone keeps telling him to just get rid of dog like its a normal thing to do but i don't think getting rid of a pet when it don't fit into your lifestyle anymore is normal

"Yes I wouldn't give it a second thought, I've heard so much about a pet for life but realistically it's probably 10 - 15 yr if that. Your potential partner could be your soul mate and last actually 80-90 yr and actually the rest of your life." Your potential partner could be your soul mate.. or it could only last a few months and you've thrown away unconditional love? Some parrots and tortoises can live for 50+ years.. a lot longer than the majority of relationships.. I'll stick with the pets

He needs to man up and tell her that they'll either continue with the relationship with the dog, or not. After all, they started going out in the beginning with her knowing he had a dog? Unless the dog is aggressive towards her, that maybe a different story, but if he gets rid of the dog and then the relationship ends, then he'll regret it.

"A humans feelings is more important I find it incredible people would put a partners feelings second to an animal. If someone really loved someone who had issues with a pet they wouldn't put them under that strain they would make the decision first and re-home the pet in a happy environment. " i can only speak for me personally but a relationship where i had to rehome my dogs for a partner would never work, i would resent them and end up leaving them so it would make more sense for me to end the relationship and keep my dogs

" I don't have my dog any more but I can't even begin to imagine parting with him to make way for a bloke. It just wouldn't happen. There would be no strain because I'd guess I'd know pretty quickly into a relationship if there was a problem. My dog would come first without question. It's not incredible, it's just how it is. Have you ever had a dog? /curious

" Possibly but what would be next to be dumped? I dont think its all about the pet its deeper and is about expecting someone to change their life to fit round someone else. I adore my dog and no, wouldnt give her up for a potential relationship however, I am sensible about it to the point where I do regard her as a dog, not a mini person...she is an animal that I have chosen to love and be responsible for and is now a big part of my daily life. To expect someone to give that up simply because you dont like dogs is a tad selfish in my book. I think if the g/f had any thought for him then she would make an effort to get to know the dog and build up a relationship with it...many who 'dont like dogs/cats etc' say this without ever knowing what it is to own one.
