Pets are like mini-people, it'd be like giving your baby away after it had gotten to know you.

I have a friend who was stupid enough to give their dog away because they wanted to get a cat instead. Two weeks later, the dog was hit by a car and killed. They regretted that alot.

my brother has been seeing a woman for a while now, its getting difficult for them as she wont go to his house as she don't like dogs so refuses to go, but its hard for him to go to hers as he cant leave the dog, she wants him to stay over night etc and moans when he leaves to go back to the dog, she has suggested he got rid of the dog but he wont, and she finds it really odd he would put the dog before their relationship, he's been round today for a moan, he says he cant see the relationship going anywhere because of this, i feel bad for him but i have to be honest i wouldn't leave my dogs alone while i stayed at a partners house or rehome them either, he said everyone keeps telling him to just get rid of dog like its a normal thing to do but i don't think getting rid of a pet when it don't fit into your lifestyle anymore is normal

Don't have any pets at the moment, but if I did, then there is no way I would even consider getting rid of them for some relationship. Rather the oposite, if anyone asked me to do so they would find the relationship coming to a swift end, cause to even ask indicates that they really don't know or want to now me at all.

Yes I wouldn't give it a second thought, I've heard so much about a pet for life but realistically it's probably 10 - 15 yr if that. Your potential partner could be your soul mate and last actually 80-90 yr and actually the rest of your life.

Your potential partner could be your soul mate.. or it could only last a few months and you've thrown away unconditional love?

Some parrots and tortoises can live for 50+ years.. a lot longer than the majority of relationships..

I'll stick with the pets

In that situation - no. He needs to man up and tell her that they'll either continue with the relationship with the dog, or not. After all, they started going out in the beginning with her knowing he had a dog? Unless the dog is aggressive towards her, that maybe a different story, but if he gets rid of the dog and then the relationship ends, then he'll regret it.

I suppose this shows your not entirely in love with the new person in your life.

To me if i found my idesl match a dog cat budgie or goldfish wouldnt come between us and if a person i was about to consider spending my life with had issues deciding between me and a pet then the answer lies therein.

I don't have my dog any more but I can't even begin to imagine parting with him to make way for a bloke. It just wouldn't happen.

There would be no strain because I'd guess I'd know pretty quickly into a relationship if there was a problem. My dog would come first without question. It's not incredible, it's just how it is.

Have you ever had a dog? /curious

Possibly but what would be next to be dumped? I dont think its all about the pet its deeper and is about expecting someone to change their life to fit round someone else. I adore my dog and no, wouldnt give her up for a potential relationship however, I am sensible about it to the point where I do regard her as a dog, not a mini person...she is an animal that I have chosen to love and be responsible for and is now a big part of my daily life. To expect someone to give that up simply because you dont like dogs is a tad selfish in my book. I think if the g/f had any thought for him then she would make an effort to get to know the dog and build up a relationship with it...many who 'dont like dogs/cats etc' say this without ever knowing what it is to own one.

I suppose like any and every question raised in the forums the right answer lies with the OP.

Whatever you decide to do its right for you. You will get some very strong opinions but these opinions are only relevant to the individual making them.

If your pet is so important then obviously its no to the new person another person will come along as will another pet. Just dont confuse the 2 or the police will take an interest lol xx
