My family have always fostered the teens nobody wanted. I want to do the same, I think tomorrow I start the ball rolling.

Not a beer thread. I work in care a lot different from fostering and I can explain why. I so want to foster like my mum and dad did. 1 min im like I can do this next min im like im to thick. I've now decided I've got to do what I want. I know I would be a great foster parent

Foster parents come from all walks of life, so never believe you are too thick to do it.

However its a very challenging role and it won't be all rosy and happy families. No amount of training will equip you for the reality but it will give you some knowledge. Make sure that family members are also accepting of this.

Go into it with your eyes open. Ensure you know the case history before you accept a child. Dont be put under pressure to accept a more challenging child if they are beyond your capabilities,

Go to social groups set up for foster carers. It will give you a chance to meet up with other carers, maybe make a few friends, very worthwhile for support for you, meet the social workers in the local team, core group members from health care, police, probation school, probation services etc,

Sorry my phone went funny so I count continue in the same post ......

Fostering can be an immensely rewarding career, but don't have an idealised view of it. You won't be able to 'save' all of the children placed with you, you may dislike some of them, don't be afraid to voice your true feelings to the professionals helping you.

You will hear stories of immense suffering and cruelty, ensure you are tough enough to deal with it. You will

see first hand the damage caused and be accepting that you can't always make it better. Your role will be to provide a comfortable home, food. boundaries, consistency, support, guidance etc.

What will make it worthwhile will be the difference to someone's life that you can give by providing for their needs.

Good luck, don't make a decision too lightly and talk

South East Midlands NOT

The country is crying out for more foster carers. If I had a more stable life (and parenting experience!) i'd do it. Good for you!
