Songs that take you back..

Do you ever hear a song and it just takes you back to a certain time and place and brings back loads of memories?

I just heard "one republic - counting stars" and it reminded me of a few months back in Magaluf and the most amazing beach party ever, such good memories

Anybody have any?

I was on holiday in Torquay when Elvis died. Every juke box in every pub we went in was playing his records all day.

When ever I hear an Elvis record I think of the day he died

I'm listening to Absolute 80's so most of the songs remind me of some party and the things I used to get upto.

Just played 'West End Girls' by the Pet Shop Boys, I remember thinking how different they were.

Oh wow now it's Echo Beach...!!

"Echo Beach, far away in time....."

A seaside town near you!

It always amazes me how, no matter how many years it is since you've heard a song, as soon as it plays you know all the words!! I can hardly remember what I did last week but I know all the words to all the old songs I used to dance to in my teens!!!

I love many forms of art. However, I always think music is the most powerful at being associated with a specific time. Different songs mean many different things to me. However, I'd say The Smiths, There is a light that never goes out. It reminds me of growing up, my neighbour teaching me about good music, The Smiths were one of her favourite groups and I often saw the band tee shirts on the washing line (especially after a music festival!)

This track was fittingly played at her funeral when she died last year. However, it doesn't make me think of that...Just how full of life she was and how she loved music!

My life has and always will have a sound track... Every song reminds me of some time or place, and every thing reminds me of a song.

"To live without my music, would be impossible to do.

In this world of troubles, my music pulls me through."

Ah yeah Shakin' Stevens. Merry Christmas Everyone. December 1985.

School Christmas disco, my first "proper" kiss with a girl called Sarah. Never forget it, every Christmas the memories come flooding back

On a more downbeat note, I physically can't listen to Love Inc 'You're a Superstar' anymore, despite actually liking the song. That was playing the moment I was told my mother probably wouldn't last the night after emergency surgery and to expect the worst.

Luckily she pulled through, but if that comes on the radio I have to just turn it off :'-(

...Up on the Downs

Oh so many - first one that springs to mind is 10cc 'I'm not in Love', reminds me of my first true love, awww!

But one which really takes me back and I know not why is PhD 'I won't let you down' - for some reason I find it so evocative of an era (1982) a feeling, but I can't remember why, it doesn't remind me of anyone?

However I was surprised my nephew bought me the 4 albums so far made by Canadian group Arcade Fire, as he thought I'd like them. Never heard them or of them, had them for two months before putting one on. Listened to all of them in succession, I think they're brilliant. Not one weak song.

Clacton-On-Sea, Essex

Lady (hear me tonight) by modjo just reminds me of being on holiday with my parents in the heat of summer sitting on a cliff top in Cornwall.

It always made them both sing at the top of their lungs. There are many songs that remind me of such holidays as we would go every year, but that one will always be the standout.

Nowadays I listen to a lot more Pink Floyd / The Verve / Oasis - all background music to my childhood

That takes me back to my University days. There was a cover band that did a fabulous version of that, Bohemian Rhapsody and many, many more. They played a local pub and a big gang of us went every Friday night to watch them. They were the best cover band I've ever heard. I was fortunate enough to get to know them quite well. Anyway I got the chance to sing and play with them. I had just got back with my girlfriend and she was with us. I got up with the band and sang and played Wonderful Tonight - Eric Clapton. Because that's how she looked.

A very special memory
