Are old bikes worth anything?

No, I'm not putting Kate on ebay

I've got two old racing bikes, a Carlton 10 that's seen better days and a nice old Peugeot Tourna mile.

The Carlton is from around 1969 and the Peugeot a couple of years younger.

Think they cost around £30-£40 brand new.

Both were top quality bikes in their day. The Carlton has got classic fancy frame lugs and still has the original cycle badge on the handlebar stem

There seems to be plenty of modern cyclists on here and just wondered if anybody could tell me if my old bikes are worth anything

Aww thought you meant motorbikes. With them typically whatever was the "big thing" when somone was 16-19 will be worth a lot of money when those people turn 40 and want to buy the bike they dreamed about as a kid.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Look on the ebay and see if there are any others and that will give you a guide price. But you knew that.

Yeah they can be worth a pretty penny. A lot of the fixed gear fans often try pick up old classic frames to convert

Serious answer. Depends on the make and model I guess. Have a look to see what similar ones are fetching.

Silly answer. Some of the ones I've seen here look like a comfy ride, with plenty of miles left in them. Just make sure you advertise: sold as seen and no returns!

My first thought when I saw it was a JackandKate thread was "Poor Kate, what's he saying about her this time"

The Raleigh Chopper is collectable to the point people are paying £300-£400 for a decent one which is 10 times what they cost.

Hi,

If the frames are in good nic then yes they can be worth something, as mensioned before the 'fixie' crown love them (weirdos...lol)

Check out Brick Lane Cycles in London, they might even buy them off you?

My first 'proper' racing bike was a chrome plated Carlton many moons ago when 5 or 10 gears was cutting edge!

Are they in good nick with original components?

If so potentially well into 3 figures if they are proper racing bikes rather than bikes that look like racing bikes. Retro bikes are big money at that moment.

If you're happy emailing pics I'll happily have a look for you

I think most stuff is worth a bit if you hang onto it for long enough. The villain in Raiders of the Lost Ark, made a similar quip about how something dumped in the sand becomes priceless after 2000 years. So, in that spirit, rather than cash in now, put them in the loft with a note, saying do not disturb till 4014 and your descendants will be forever grateful.
