It was 17 years ago today that Diana died, an incredibly sad day for a lot of people. A beautiful woman gone too soon xx

I didn't realise it was 17 years ago, it still seems like yesterday.

I remember seeing it on the news and thinking that it was a mistake, such a waste

I remember balling my eyes out during Candle in the Wind. There was a part of me saying what the hell is going on here. Why do I feel like this?

Diana was an archetypal figure that personified an innocence and a deep capacity for love. Her life had a tragic fairytale like quality to it. At some level I think that is what the nation tapped into.

I was in Italy on holiday. It was on the TV news in Italian. I went out and told my family and friends as a matter of interest and within minutes the whole pool area was empty and everyone was indoors round the TV.

She died because she did not wear a seat belt. If she had worn one she would be here today.

Sadly she died in a car accident. If she had worn a seatbelt she would have survived uninjured.

With any assination you need confidence that the process will kill the intended victim as you may not get a second chance. In this circumstance there was a very low risk of death had they belted up. As a result I believe assination to be very unlikely. The driver lost control in a 30mph tunnel at high speed and crashed.

I agree I cried when I heard the news that she had died it was a shock but think they went way over the top the way they kept going on about it.

I think her sons were very brave and they are getting on with their lives, you don't just think of your loved ones on the anniversary of their death you think about them most of the time.

She wasn't a celebrity, she was the mother of a future king, part of a royal family that a lot of people in this country (and other countries) admire and respect. She was incredibly young to die and given what was going on with her ex-husband at the time it was inevitable that conspiracy theories would start flying around. It is also understandable if some people didn't and still can't understand the outpouring of grief Diana received on that day.

on a side note i was living in holland at the time and didnt hear about it for 2 weeks

i rang home 2 weeks after she died and my mother was still crying.i kid you not

She was divorced and with her boyfriend. She was a wonderful mother and won't be the first or last to travel abroad without her children.

I was in Paris at the time. The subway bridge was covered in flowers...would not wish such a tragic loss on any family. Sadly it is happening every day around the world. No flowers for them or memorials.

Wow I cant get over that 17 years ..... it still feel like no more than 10 to me ... Its was all so very sad and I still feel we may hear more about it all one day . Loads of things never add up and She was a victim I feel .

Not in such volumes as they are not in the public eye, but not all loss is played out in such a public forum.

They will have the flowers and memorial and the same love from their families just as my friends daughter had earlier this year.

By those that count she is missed no less than Diana just as Diana is missed by those closest to her.

I was still living at home at the time. .

My mum informed me of Diana's death

I found it hard to believe but it was all over the news.... I went to work.. I can remember having a go at one of the students that I worked with as he was so flippant about it.... that was such a sad day.... I broke my heart watching the the boys walking behide the car... so moving to see the streets full of bodys all thinking the same. .. she was a diamond and I can see her through her boys... xxx I for one will never forget her

Whilst I found it shocking that Diana died so young I felt more sympathy for her children. But grief? Not really. I didn't know her. Whereas when my cousin died I did as that was personal to me.

I remember the shock at the death, waking up on a Sunday morning turned on TV to this news.

Like some others have said, for me it was shock rather than grief as I never knew her. But as with anyone, very sad for those left behind.

The real abiding memory for me was the very solemn music played on radio stations all day, even the likes of Radio 1 etc (which I still used to listen to back then!)

Very eerie, only time in my lifetime that such music has been pulled off the shelf and I can imagine it will be the same when the Queen dies.

Very different to when the Queen Mother died when I recall a news flash and afterwards back to the normal Saturday night programming.

It's all very sad. I still think that the Queen condoning Charles seeing Camilla before and during their marriage caused the problems and contributed to Diana's death. Paparazzi chasing the car and the d*unk chauffeur didn't help either and yes, she should have worn her seatbelt. I could go on but it won't change the fact that a beautiful lady died and her sons and grandson are deprived of her.

I'm not a fan. But she did help and raise awareness for about a hundred good causes. Including hiv/AIDS, the homeless, disabled adults and children and campaigning for the manufacture and use of landmines to stop, to name just a few. She did a lot of good.

No offence but the same people who cried a river would scrap over the last copy of the Sun to get the long lens shots of her with Will Carling etc etc.

Maybe the gossip magazine buying lot(now daily mail online readers) out there might consider stop indirectly giving the pararzzi jobs and the we can sleep safe knowing that a kardashian/ Middleton/ random celeb or whatever will get home safely.

I did not assume anyone here was that type so no offence was a correct claim- I just said it was likely the cross mate toon if society I mentioned would be culpable- are the here?...I have no idea.

I had met her, I felt sad for her children when she died, (met William at uni too) but didn't grieve for her as I never really knew her.

Unfortunately it is also the anniversary of my partners death, and that I will never get over, he too left a young son behind and I have raised him as a single parent for eleven years since his father was so cruelly taken from us.

I grieve for those I know and love, not someone who has no impact on my life.

Let's face it, the death of any young person in such circumstances is tragic. A young mother of two children, no matter what her social status, is a tragedy.
