Do you ride a pushbike without a helmet….

Is it because they look silly or rather you feel silly wearing it?

Do you think it looks cool to not have one?

Does it mess up your hair do and that’s why you don’t wear one?

May be it’s a bit hot and uncomfortable?

quite agree my kids and me all ride with helmets and have them replaced regular , i have seen too many bad head injuries and the after math at work not to

and I reckon high heeled shoes should be banned too. Would reduce the number of sprained ankles and ingrowing toenails greatly

pedestrians should wear safety hemets and safety glasses, get dust in your eyes, fall over and......a trip to A&E

I support helmets for cyclists been mandatory. Having retired from racing several years ago, I still wear my helmet when I go cycling. It's second nature to put it on. While helmets dont elimate injury, they reduce the risk of permanent damage. I see plenty of kids cycling to school without helmets and believe this is something which should be addressed by the local authorities.

Never cycle without it, it protects your head from impact to the road or even being hit by a car, sure you might get a bone broken somewhere else but your brain will hopefully stay intact, my brother cycles without a helmet and I'm constantly blocking him about it, but like most he thinks they look stupid with one on.

Personally I've driven about 300,000 miles in my life and have yet to knock a cyclist off. A post like yours make me willing to give it a go though...

People do stupid and reckless things every day, the consequences of which could cause devestation to those left behind:

Driving a car without a seat belt;

Using a mobile while driving;

Getting behind the wheel after a drink;

Gambling away the mortgage;

Cheating on your partner;

Bungee jumping;

I could go on...you can't legislate against everything!

More state intervention on our lives, we all take various risks in our lives, but we don't have to have a law to deal with it. Crossing the road is very dangerous, with many head injuries, so helmets for crossing the road next?

Swinging has many risk factors but we all deal with them by tying reducing(while not completely eliminating)the risk. You'll want people who swing wear full body armour next, or be taken to your next meet by your parents.

driving along i saw a guy on a bike about to come out of a side street in front of me,

daft me i thought he would stop at the junction, no he just came stright out i swerved to miss him then pulled over and shouted at him to look where he was going.

his reply was "you had plenty of room to get out of my way " 12 tons of wagon at 30 mph bike at 10 mph who will win

As you say (in the not so stupid part of your post) "but we all deal with them by trying to reduce them".... and that's part of my point.... riding a pushbike without a helmet IS NOT trying to reduce the most serious potential injury.... fucking up your brain. Which by the way doesn't take much.

As for someone else's comment about cars... potholes, dogs running out, diesel on the road.... I can make a list (one item for every point of your IQ) of the reasons people can come off a bike. Your head hitting a solid object causes damage.... it's the speed of impact and a dose of luck which decides the rest.

I agree with you there, I have a High viz top when cycling too, and on the dark nights, I'm lit up light a christmas tree so theres no way I cant be seen by any other road users.

I agree with you- helmets should be mandatory.

I'd go so far as confiscating a bicycle for people not wearing them. A mate of mine has a metal plate in his head after colliding with a lamp post.

He was told much of the injury he sustained could have been avoided with a helmet.

I also wear a high viz jacket/top.

I actually understand where hes coming from, i ride a bike regular and the amount of cars that pull out on me is un real, ive got to the point now where i stop when i have the right of way to let cars out of junctions because ive had that many hits and hear misses i just dont trust cars to stop, even when i was on a cycle lane i was hit by a car and the guys defence to that was....i didnt see her.... its was the middle of the day last August, what was he blind? what they mean by that is as cars approch junctions they look out for other cars but anything smaller just dont count so they drive on as if your not there, 3 times now i've been knocked off by car who pull up amd just open the door like your not there, a helmet isnt going to stop any of that, what we need is awearness lessons for drivers to make them notice things on the road smaller than other cars, because at the end of the day most car drivers just dont notice or care about bikes, and when i say bike users im talking adults who use the roads properly not daft kids that just weave in and out of traffic being a menace to everyone

my 2 brothers broke arms riding their bikes and falling off as kids. But their bones fixed eventually.

If they fell off and damaged their head thru not hvina helmet then without the brain the rest of you is no good. Wether your arm is broken or not.

People walking clearly shouldnt have a helmet as is a silly thing to say unless they are runners which may get to a similar speed of a bike going along so maybe then yes.

There is now some head protection available for toddling children as they tend to fall easily, so is parents choice but maybe going a bit far.

I do think it is selfish for cyclists to not wear a helmet ans if they die or have a serious injury their family will suffer. Maybe them too.

It should be law, like not texting while driving...

When I cycle with my kids we have high vis in dark evenings and lights like xmas tree too and helmets for all.

Yes I look like a twatt, but am a safe twatt and so are my kids.

I think childrens parents should have a warning if their child is seen with no helmet and then a fine of somekind or bike being taken away until they have a helmet (but actually wear it)

It is down to parents. How many have said on here I as an adult dont waer one but make my kids. So your kids life is important but yours isnt? If you die who is going to care for your kids?

Everyone riding a bike should have a helmet and a bike that actually fits

I think a few in hear will know how I've reacted to drivers in the past, not had any incidents for a while now but i do try and guess what drivers are thinking as there waiting to pull out and try to avoid any kerfuffles. I cycle daily through a very busy route, its quite the white knuckle journey but I always make sure I claim my space on the road, I'm wearing all the correct attire and abide by the rules, ie I dont go through red lights, when I see other cyclist do that it winds me right up

having been a racing cyclist for many years i am anxious to keep on living and to continue to ride my cycle but it really is annoying to see cyclist going to and from work in dark clothing and no lights!,when i used to go out training on dark nights it would be with full set of working lights,a flasher rear light attached to my lower body(not the bike as against the law!)a hi-vis top with refletor bands on ankles and wrists and gloves with a reflector band on them as well!.

but guess what?,i was twice hit by cars in broad daylight!,these motorist wankers were far too busty racing from A2B they could not be bothered to stop at junctions but tried to continue without stopping and thus hospitalised me!,british cycling lawyers fought cases for compensation on my behalf.

i doubt whether the motorists even got points on the licence for the offences.
