It was in the news today that 50% of those in a survey who had done it hadn't even bothered to donate a single penny to charity.

It's just become one of those daft fads which hit Facebook regularly and the whole point of it has been lost by many. Which is a shame.

MND donations up from 1.9m in August 13, to 21m in August 14!!

I'd say its working!

Wish people would remember the real cause here, kinda upset at seeing people doing it for cancer charities etc... i' say cancer has enough awareness.. MND is largely unheard of in the UK, I know I knew nothing about it until it ripped my family apart!

I've done it. I donated to the cancer charity in error first as I just copied the number posted. I then donated to the correct charity shortly after.

It's keeping it up that's the hard work. It is positive that so much has been donated. I just find the 'hey look at me' posts of those who don't donate which are all over social media leave a very nasty taste in my mouth.

These are the same kind of people who think clicking 'like' on any post asking for support for good causes makes them genuinely empathetic. It means they don't ACTUALLY have to do anything as long as they are SEEN to be doing it.

There are plenty of people who do charitable work or who donate regularly and who don't make a big production about it - and they are the ones who make a difference every single day.

I've been nominated but have no intention to throw good clean water over myself. It's not a charity I support as this unfortunate disease has no cure whereas other life threatening diseases do have cures and I'd prefer to use my money on an illness that actually can be cured and will give a person a chance to live longer such as cancer or similar. It's unfortunate for those who have it but no amount of money in the world is gonna take it away from a person suffering with it.

Iv been nominated and said no as I get ice cold pissing rain on me half the year at work as it is.

However I do have a direct debit for battersea dogs home and have run marathons for cancer research in the past along with 8months doing animal conservation in the rainforest

It's entirely your choice what charities to give to but your reason for not donating to this one seem a bit daft.

I done it yesterday and donated to MND. My friends Dad was diagnosed with it a couple of years ago, there's not nearly enough awareness about it. Even if the people doing it don't donate they are at least helping raise the awareness. It might well be a fad but at least its a positive one for a change

Like you said, my choice...where my money goes is also my choice. The amount of people with motor neurones is only a fraction to other diseases. I feel the bigger threat gets my attention.

Have you considered that the reason there is no cure is because they lack funds to research a cure

Not so long ago people were dying of many diseases that can now be treated and cured because people have been funded to research and find cures

This is a hereditary disease that travels through generations. There are parts of out bodies once damaged or broken can no longer be repaired.

ALS in the states received funding of $27m dollars last year so they're far from struggling.

The Ice Bucket challenge wasn't started by ALS or MND for that matter and isn't run or coordinated by them. It was one challenge in the states for a guy called Pete Frates and just kept growing and growing from there. The challenge supposedly originated in New Zealand where people donated to whichever charity they want so this isn't 'for' MND.

I donated to MDN and Macmillan as they both do amazing work and the fact that money to find cures for both these diseases has to come from the public is nothing short of a disgrace!

And again hopefully by people raising the issue of people not having clean water will raise awareness and funds for those charities. Which is basically what Matt Damon said and demonstrated in his video.

He did the challenge to a backdrop of a poster promoting his water charity.

Yep - a picture of BOTH of us - The "jaccuzi" is not a bath, its a bubble pool (its air blown though tubes into water), adjoined to the main swimming pool. The water is recirculated - not wasted

God some people are such moaning Minnie! ! It's a bit of fun to raise awareness for charity! ! And as usual there are people having a good ole moan!! I know let's all live in poverty and not waste a drop of water because another country can't get its shit together and sort out its water problems!!

My dad has just been nominated. Whereas I've had to keep my mouth shut in other circumstances, I just explained to him what this challenge actually means.

Do you know what your money is paying for?

It's paying for animals to be tortured. It's paying for mice to have holes drilled into their heads and be infected with agonising and fatal diseases. It's paying for primates to be injected into their spines with agonising and fatal diseases. Did you know that 92 of every 100 drugs that show positive reactions in animals do not in humans? Flip reverse that and think how many cures we are missing because they don't show positively in animal tests. The only reason we carry on testing on animals while there are more effective ways to research (mass spectrometry, genome mapping, innovative imaging techniques and highly developed computer models capable of simulating parts of the human body as mathematical equations and three-dimensional graphical models, just to name a few) is because of MONEY.

The ALS Association, who are benefitting from this challenge, has only produced TWELVE positive drug reactions in animals in the last DECADE. Only one of which has gone on to help humans (a minor drug to ease some side effects). They have been given £48million just this last month to put into torturing countless more animals.

Not only this, but how awful that in a world, where we are closer to fighting over water than oil and 3400000 humans die every year because they don't have access to clean water, we are busy throwing it over our heads to avoid donating a full sum of money to charity. If everyone that has partaken in this challenge had donated a couple of quid to provide clean water to these people instead of wasting it, 260000 homes would be provided with water (from the source that I read stats from- can't find a confirmation of this info).

Please think before donating. Compassionate Care ALS provide holistic resources and care for sufferers and their families.

Alternatively you could search humaneseal.org to find charities that do not use animal research to donate to.

For those of you worried about animal experiments the ALS/MND charities have a compassionate care charity page you can donate to. All this money just goes towards care for those with this illness. Nothing goes towards research.

It's not about being glad about it. It's a sad fact that most of our major medical breakthroughs over the years have been discovered this way. And frankly, I personally find the idea of watching my friend watch his Father wither away to a helpless shell, and his Mother loosing the only love of her life, and his nephew not getting a chance to know the Grandfather he wanted to be, a much bigger and more heartbreaking tragedy. I would never hurt an animal intentionally but until there are other, more viable ways to come up with these treatments then I believe it's a necessary evil. Not for cosmetic testing but for treatments that could one day stop any awful life threatening debilitating disease in it's tracks.

Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion, but while you're laying into people about their choice to do what they can, when they can because they choose too, think about how far you'd be willing to go and what you'd be willing to do for a someone you love, be it friend, lover, family or child.

As for your arguement that ALS use money raised by funding for salaries, so does every charity. The retail shops are the worst for it. Generally the charity itself will only see 10 to 20 pence of every £1 spent in one due to salaries and overheads. Which is much more than the 50% you're complaining about in this instance. Would you stand in these shops and tell manager, who's paid a salary, that they're a disgrace for accepting that wage? Or accept that that is their way of doing their bit to help??
