Fear is one of our most important senses, it keeps us alive.

It becomes a problem if a person becomes afraid of their fear.

The OP now knows how it feels to overcome a fear, it can be incredibly liberating.

So well done OP, you are a real hero to yourself

Now who wants to hold one of my tarantulas?

Spiders are cool - they keep the insect population down, especially if you live in the country. I think Hollywood has to take a fair share of the responsibility for arachnophobia!

Not as much as the tarantula - before & after!!

I had a big fella in my bathroom in Thailand once- & he was an aggressive bugger too, lol - but lets face it, just like 99.999% of the rest of spiders or snakes, - they're scared of US!!

Surely crocs aren't considered a phobia, as there is a real threat of a croc killing you so it is a logical response to be scared of them?!

Spiders in this country on the other hand is definitely a phobia as they are unlikely to be able to harm you, so it is an illogical reaction to be scared of them... saying that though they still scare the shit out of me

Yeah unfortunately that spider was squashed by the time I realised what it was. I felt bad as it was completely my fault. Came back after drinking a bottle of neat rum with locals and fell sleep on on top of my mosquitoe net (not in it) with the door to my hut wide open, pretty stupid as was in the middle of the Amazon anything could of walked in and cuddled up with me lol

Yes, I've heaps about people traveling through the Amazon (& getting lost) & Bolivia would be my no1 choice, cool!

The reason I said close to the Andes is that when you have a bit of elevation, you get more perspective of the jungle & its vastness......... & there's some excellent rafting too, I here.

Somewhere in North Norfolk

It's probably a good thing I'm not scared of spiders. I'm in bed looking up at 4 of them on my bedroom ceiling.

They've been in here for a couple of weeks. I'm leaving them alone on the hope they'll eat all the nasty bitey insects that have been about.

The spiders are safe as long as they stay on the ceiling. If they get within reach of my boy cat, he'll eat them.

Anyone would think I don't feed him... (I do! Bloody expensive specialist food too! Little sod)

My fears are spiders and mice and rats.

I'm too scared to face them though. Luckily the rats and mice one doesn't affect me much as I don't see them at all.

Myself and my boys are scared of spiders and that is a problem. I was annoyed Friday night when my sons girlfriend stayed over, and she's actually held a tarantula, but wouldn't kill or get rid of a large spider on the wall, It took us nearly an hour to pluck up courage to kill it

I could not leave spiders in the house to live and roam freely if I knew they were there. Even if I wasn't scared of them, which obviously I am, why would anyone want insects living in their house. Makes the place look unclean especially when they leave webs.

Thanks I will check out that book.

As far as how I did my trip I just moved out my flat and rented the cheapest bedroom I could find worked 6 days a week and overtime, sold my van and some other belongings booked a one way ticket and left.

Cost me 14k in total but I have some great memories and have done things that most people wouldn't even dream of like searching and catching anacondas, catching caiman and much more

Amazon trip man... What you did is truly inspiring proving the point that dreams can be realised IF enough effort is put into it. Oh yes, and I'm riddled with envy

Holly Wood and many other films, TV shows etc have a lot to answer for. How else could we in this country invent fears of creatures most will never meet!

Just one example is a James Bond 007 film where the bad guys try and kill him by putting a deadly spider in his hotel bed... A tarantula known as a Chilli Rose, and like all tarantulas it only has the venom power of a bee!

Amazon Man... Well I didn't want to quote all your post and your username is hidden from non-members... unless someone quotes it in a post

As for big bugs, I happened across a Hornet in Herefordshire, don;t know how it got here but it was a monster of a thing and 'yes' it makes our Wasps, Bees etc. look tiny.

I can understand fears of day-to-day things that we might encounter. What I don't understand is like my ex-wife who had an acute fear of Sharks! Now you don't tend to see to many Sharks swimming up the local high street in the UK or popping around the U-bend when you're taking a dump!

But for people who really suffer fear of every day things such as spiders, wasps, bees, things you cannot control or avoid I'd always suggest you try and overcome it.

Seriously, I've helped a few people overcome their fear of spiders, using the tarantulas. When you can be very close to and in most cases handle a tarantula all other spiders are no longer an issue.

But its not just overcoming one fear. Typically it makes for a new mindset, "Well if I can overcome my fear of spiders, what else can I overcome?". It can in fact do so much for a persons confidence as well as being a very liberating experience. And that is coming from someone who was so terminally body shy that for the first 35 years of my life the only nakedness I'd show in public would be my hands and face! I wouldn't even wear a short sleeved shirt! That was then, however last weekend we spent at a swingers nudist camp
