I was chatting to someone I know, in other words an acquaintance rather than a friend, when he casually remarked that since he had been on chemo-therapy his sense of smell had become more acute. "Oh! How is that now?", I said. He replied that it was now finished. "Oh good!", I said. He shrugged his shoulders and replied, "No, they can't do anything about it".

you dont have to say anything next. Just listen. if he wants to talk let him. dont go round with the cliches or try and examine everything about his treatment. he has a lot to come to terms with and he might not be ready to go into any more detail yet.

Which is what I did, but more by accident than design.

i just read one of thosecheesy posts on facebook which is actually quite apt here.

when we talk we simply repeat what we have learned, when we listen we have the opportunity to learn something new.

by design or accident the right thing was done.

I would just tell him that I will be here whenever he wants to talk about it
