Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

After 30 years together I am planning to replace my dear friend, my bed.

This mattress is almost ten years old and the frame is a bit creaky now so it's time.

But it feels like such a wrench. I look at the pictures of potential new best friends and they are attractive but I wonder if we will get on as well as my bed and I.

How do you separate from the things you love?

Any bed recommendations?

How apt as i lie here in my new bed debating if I like it or not lol. Just treated myself to an ivory leather sleigh bed which I love but changed from a memory foam topped mattress to just a sprung mattress.

I am worried about just that. The memories as much as anything. My son was conceived in this bed.

Spend as much as you can for comfort same as shoes. I have a Vi sprung divan and it is worth every penny brass bed frame - not so good it does creak.

I'm not a brassy woman. I know I will get a wooden frame. I have £750 for a bed in the kitty and expect to spend most of that on the mattress. If I see the right thing though then I may go into credit card territory. Bed is so important - I spend more time in it than I do my car so it needs the same level of consideration as any major purchase.

I love my bed, it's the best one I've ever had. It's a divan base with a 1200 sprung mattress, with a memory foam topper. It wasn't cheap but boy it's been worth every penny

I have a cheap ikea bed frame but spent a fortune on the mattress.....I love my bed too. I never sleep as well in any other bed, which is very unfortunate as I spend 200+ days a year in hotels

From a similar vein, I decided to attempt to wash my winter duvet today (the actually duvet) as it's getting colder and opted to do it in the bath so I didn't destroy the motor on my washing machine.

What a ballache that's turned into. Bloody thing must weight at least 12kg.

I've had the same cast iron bedstead for over 20 years. Just replace the odd broken wood slat now and then

Am toying with the idea of painting it cream as the pewter look is a bit dated now.

Mattress wise.. I found a memory foam on ebay 3 years ago and am converted. In fact I bought 2 more almost immediately for the spare room and my Mum. It's the most comfortable thing I've ever slept on. Even my fb tends to snooze quite happily on it and he's always full of aches and pains (from work incidents, not me!)

The only thing I miss is the bounce of a sprung mattress

It will take forever to dry. Get it to a launderette.

It took me a while to work out what a ballache (bal ash) was.

beds and sofas are so hard to replace - many years ago me and the ex kept a ridiculously shabby sofa- it dipped at the back but whilst i was pregnant was perfect to plonk the bump into - oh grief copper coloured velour -

Mine doesn't and has never squeaked, my old wooden frame however squeaked for England. As long as it's put together properly and tightly there are no squeaking issues

put an airer/kitchen stool. in the bath and lay it over - let the water pour out - its does quite quickly at first then its squeezable

we regularly have to get the allan key out and tighten up the screws - especially before we have people round - we laugh enough as it is without guffawing over the bed joining in

Sounds like a sensible idea. I just rolled it up and held it for a few minutes, tipped it on it's end for a few minutes then flipped it the other way and ran outside with it. Luckily I have a beam to hang it over from a swinging bench. Wrapped that sucker in clingflim first. Jobs a good'un!

I bought the silent night miracoil supreme - It is 12 inches thick. My back isn't as sore as it was, but I'm hoping it will just take a few more days to get used to it even more.

I used to have a memory foam mattress and it was great for the first 12 months then my back really didn't like it.

Go to somewhere like Furniture village which normally have a huge selection and try as many mattresses as possible. Once you have found the one you like they can usually be sourced online for a decent price. Given you spend about 1/3 of the average day in bed, it is worth investing in quality. I changed recently and ended up with a Vi-Spring + luxury topper and it is brilliant, but it all comes down to personal preference so try as many as you can, and don't rush the decision.

mine is a sprung mattress with a topper in it - not a separate one - doesnt need flipping over but we swizzle it 180 degs every so often - had it 9 years and is a lovely now as then - only go that as we moving in new home after divorce went to a local place for kids beds and this was ex display -

I just have a divan now.

The bed in my spare room is so comfy, it has a 25 year guarantee mattress it came from IKEA and the mattress is only an inch think but so bloody comfortable

Separating from my last mattress was easy. The bloody bastard thing assaulted me, (it was bloody, literally, afterwards).

My car... that was a wrench. The new one is lovely but it was still very difficult.

There's not much in the way of furniture I'd struggle to part with. Books, on the other hand, are an entirely different matter.

I don't think I could cope with being that hot. I have a memory foam topper at the moment and the way that I keep it cool enough is to wrap it in two cotton sheets.

This is the problem I am having with my new(ish) bed. I cannot find sheets that fit it well, at least not for sensible money. It doesn't help I don't have much patience to look.

Dunelm do deep fitted sheets, or just opt for flat sheets a size bigger then your mattress - I always buy kingsize even though my bed is a standard double cos I find they stay tucked in better.

My local Fenwicks have put the bedding right next to the cosmetics. Go to John Lewis where they are on different floors.

I have now found Natural Air Pocket sprung mattresses. Isn't there air in all springs because of the space?

If you love something why would you want to get rid of it? Maybe consider having it repaired.

"Is 13 inches clearance too much under-bed area?

I have now found Natural Air Pocket sprung mattresses. Isn't there air in all springs because of the space?

Not if, like me, you fill the space with plastic crates full of shoes and handbags.

Our old dog used to sleep under my bed but I haven't had anything under the bed for nearly 20 years.

I've taken the plunge and placed an order for a firm wooden bed in an oak finish with a 1,500 pocket sprung mattress that says it's perfect for fat people and to reduce back pain.

"After 30 years together I am planning to replace my dear friend, my bed.

It is as much a symbolic change as the fact that the mattress is ready for a change.

Something with a solid base, they don't break like the others but they do move around the room. We have broken every type of bed we have owned other than a solid base.

We were only jumping around thepillow fighting honest!

My duvet is 4 tog and goes in washer eeeeeasy peasy no balls aching here. Does me through winter too. Love my memory foam mattress

No need - I'll simply wait until the inevitable "My new bed is here" thread and then I will go to London armed only with my phone (and a box of matches), use the "who's near" function on Fab until I come to a building with a bedframe outside.

Today is the day. I'm spending my last half hour in my bed before it gets dismantled ready for the new arrival.

I have just been reminded of a notch on my bedpost. This bed has seen some wonderful encounters and remembering then has me smiling.

The memory of having QT on the bedroom television during a steamy meet as neither of us wanted to miss it has just popped into my head.
