"Is it William Hartnell "

I wish it were! I remember the very first Dr Who ever and it was awesome - and William Hartnell is still the only Dr that had real gravitas....

I'm hoping that Capalldi can give the Dr some real clout for a change!

Well have to say that was monumentally shite, at least the running around pointlessly was done with some panache now it appears that one can only appreciate it after fifteen cans of tenants extra whilst sitting in a pool of your own wee in a Scottish retirement home. If there was ever a reason for Scottish Independence this is it. They can take the debts from RBS and Peter Capaldi and see how well they get on.

He'll be fine. He just needs to develop the character a bit. Matt Smith and David Tennent were the same. Liked the little references to past episodes like madame dupompdor and he's seen his face before which may be a reference to explaining how Peter Capaldi was in a previous episode.

point well made - just spoiled it a bit for the kids - went to all the effort of seeing it at the cinema and tried to give them fond memories of what is a bit of an institution, there are very few shows that span both our and their childhoods and have to say they have kind of ruined it. A bit like sylvester MCCoy the BBC know how to kill the franchise.

That's the rub, they hated it, they loved the last three doctors and now it is switching them off, oh well will have to make do with netfflix.

I felt the whole aspect of the episode where Clara couldn't accept the Doctor was different while everyone else was telling her he was the same was placed in to completely mirror the audience and how hard it'll be for a lot of kids to deal that the fresh faced loveable Doctor they've known for the last three incarnations is now someone different. That phone call at the end from matt smith was a great touch, for the character of clara and the audience. Informing them that while there may be surface details and some personality alterations, this is the same Doctor Who and to not worry.

I mean the first episode contained a dinosaur in the thames along with steampunk robots. I'd assume we've got some classic Doctor Who fun spirit still in there.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

We all loved it - the kids and the adults.

I really liked the new title sequence, the story had wit and it was a great way to get you used to seeing a new face.

We looked at each other with the "O Captain! My Captain!" line too.

O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done,

The ship has weather’d every rack, the prize we sought is won,

The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,

While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;

But O heart! heart! heart!

O the bleeding drops of red

Where on the deck my Captain lies

Fallen cold and dead.

O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;

Rise up—for you the flag is flung—for you the bugle trills,

For you bouquets and ribbon’d wreaths—for you the shores a-crowding,

For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;

Here Captain! dear father!

This arm beneath your head!

It is some dream that on the deck,

You’ve fallen cold and dead.

My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still,

My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will,

The ship is anchor’d safe and sound, its voyage closed and done,

From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won;

Exult O shores, and ring O bells!

But I with mournful tread,

Walk the deck my Captain lies,

Fallen cold and dead.

I don't think there's anymore to know about Clara, the two beginning storylines for this series seem to be:

Who put the ad in the newspaper?/Who gave Clara the Doctors number in her first episode?

Who is Missy and What is 'Heaven'?

Yes. It was the just the oblique (unknowing) reference to Robin Williams and Dead Poets Society for us as well as the tale in the poem.

Bit too early to call at the moment but i'm guessing she'll be an antagonist of some sort. I've got a feeling she may be 'The Master'.

Personally I think the Doctor pushed 'the broom'. As for why he's around, i'm guessing that'll be revealed in a future episode lol.

The time slot has never suggested it was more aimed at adults. I think it didn't talk down to children.

Im just saying the Dr used to be more Darker,and the old shows use to be more intellectual and more about solving the problems in question,but now they seem to solve the problem in 10 minutes and just have flirting and making people sound stupid for the rest of the time....

Was good fun, the story was entertaining enough but the back story made the episode. Am yet to be convinced by the opening sequence and that music - so far not impressed, but may get used to it in time.

However they need to be a lot more careful with the props, nearly switched off after the first 5 minutes after noticing that the tardis door was covered in slime in the close up shots but imaculatley clean in any distant ones (a quick dollop of CGI would have corrected that glaring error). It kinda felt like some pf the production was a bit of a rush job, and spoils the escapism that a tv show like doctor who should provide.
