I can't see anyone's posted about this. I'm surprised really.

Has anyone read what he said on Twitter this week? It was pretty cold.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I saw it and didn't bring it here when I saw it as it was too emotive for me to handle at the time.

He said that Downs babies should be aborted and we shouldn't get sentimental about that.

Well last week he said Scotland shouldn't leave the u.k. so he can take all his opinions and shove them up his arse as far as I'm concerned.

"He lacks compassion for me"

I'm fairly certain he has no compassion for you at all. Nor most other people.

What a truly vile thing to say, I read it too. However, roll back 13 years and I may (I hasten to add, may) have had similar opinions.

That was until my gorgeous, beautiful nephew was born. Due to a birth injury, he has severe cerebral palsy. He changed my life! Because of him, I no longer see a disabled person, i see a person. A human being who just happens to have a disability. My heart was opened fully the day he was born. And regardless of all the challenges, heartache and sadness a disabled child bring, their sheer presence (along with a killer smile) changes you.

I dont think Mr Dawkins has ever experienced disability, if he had, he would not be making such comments. I think he just needs educating, as do most of us xx

...Up on the Downs

The man has always been a bigot, his dogmatism and bias is way too strong for me to ever give him any respect as a scientist.

I do actually agree with some of the things he says (particularly about religion etc) but can't agree on these latest comments. Easy to say such things until you are directly impacted, and then the absurdity of the comments becomes clear.

He's a geneticist, so he will have strong views on this topic.

He does come out with some weird opinions though, based on how he sees the world. I have no doubt he is highly intelligent but his empathy and ability to understand other things more emotional tends to be lacking.

As a carer myself i can understand what he means from his side about reducing suffering, but overall if someone wants to bring a child into the world and claim responsibility for it then no-one has the right to judge them for it or call them immoral.

I'm wholly unfamiliar with the guy ( i thought he was the space scientist lol) or his latest comments, but what a terrible world it would be if we all thought, or even expressed, the same eh?

I'm the same. I've heard his name but I've no idea who he is or what he does.

Sounds like a proper back to front though.

You can have back to front, I shan't be calling my pork pies growlers down here though, they wouldn't have a scooby what I was on about.

I agree with you Mr Dawkins has never had the privilege to meet disable children or adult they are the most beautiful people i have meet they show kindness, love, happiness and they are sunshine making my days more happier to look forward seeing them and working with them.

Mr Dawkins needs to buy new brain, he is so miserable don't what to do him self blame people who never done anything to him one thing i know is what goes around comes around.

Its not going to be a popular opinion. But personally I agree with him. we have had the discussion about kids and if we knew there was a disability we would want it aborted.

I think he may have a point...

I have a niece who has downs, and she is a great worry to her parents and the rest of our families. Admittedly her situation is not like disabled in this country (she and her mother is American and live outside Seattle). We all constantly worry about her future from once we are no longer there to support and care for her.

I think he was repeating what is the norm for most people now - that they abort if they have conceived a downs syndrome foetus. My best friend has just had a downs baby girl, she is lovely but has a major health problem. People should do what they think is right for them and Dawkins was only really stating what is done or would be done by most parents in this situation imo. It was not on a tv show etc, but via twitter, so not the best way to get publicity if he needed it.

This was the guy who claimed that religion was "The Root Of All Evil"... and then proceeded to go round arrogantly shouting his dogmatic views at a series of mild mannered priests and vicars lol It was great television but I'm not too sure he won very many people over to his closed minded and aggressive point of view

As for the Downs comment... this is just Josef Mengele all over again. If people aren't aware of it, the dark side of evolutionary science is that, since it's emergence, it has effectively been arguing for various methods for improving the human race's gene pool. I believe the first to do this was the American scientist BF Skinner, who argued that the Mexicans we're so inferior as a race that it would be best if they were eradicated in order to improve the global gene pool. These ideas later, of course, influenced the Nazis in their view of the Jews.

Science may be very good at telling us things about the material universe... but it hasn't got a soul, it completely lacks humanity, and is prone to dangerously inhumane ways of looking at the world. Not much different from the Taliban really lol

Haven't seen this particular article. I've long found Dawkins quite distasteful though - he's an extremist, and like all extremists whether religious or not he expresses his views in an incredibly intolerant way.

What sort of disability would you abort ?.

If the child was blind ?

A deformity of an arm or leg ?

What if the child was born and it was discovered they were deaf would you put it up for adoption.

Is it just mental disabilities you are concerned with or would you abort a child with a physical disability ?
