Yep thats me.

Just been online to tax my motorcycle, won't let me do it, because the mot runs out on wednesday but the tax begins on thursday! Bloody automated systems, anyway I can go to the post office and do it there so the system tells me.

So just been to the filing cabinet to retrieve insurance documents only to vaguely remember shredding them about 3 weeks ago

So now it looks like I am going to have to declare it off road until we return from holidays, not gonna prat about attempting to mot and tax it before friday, bloody thing is stuck in the garage anyway, been there since March without being used.

Surely its better to declare it off road anyway, instead of having to pay tax and insurance when it isn't even being used?

my road tax due out too so il go and have a root about for the insurance documents that i will have no doubt misplaced then have to do it online then have to drive about for 2 days without showing tax disc and live in fear of being stopped by the local police farce until it comes in!!

why do we torture ourselves like this!

as for the mot its to stop dodgy folk not gettin mot but gettin tax and as much as it is a pain, it does have its purpose!! x

Make sure you declare if off road and make sure you get a response as its your responsibility to ensure they receive it.

You can then tax it on line for the month after acceptance of your sorn declaration.

The post office wouldn't allow you to tax it either because effectively at the time the new tax would begin, you'd have no MOT certificate ...

North of The Wall - youll need your vest

Legally you can drive for 14 days with an expired tax disc.

When you renew it is valid from the orinignal expiry date (ie you dont get an extra 2 wks)

was under the impression (probably wrong now) that you can only continue to drive a vehicle without displaying a valid tax disc if you have applied for one and then only for five days after the expiration date of the old disc?

The only reason I say that is that my son was stopped in a local spot check and he had applied for his tax online, they checked up on their computer thingy and he came up ok but they told him he only had one further day before the 5 days ran out.

They could of course have been wrong, I never knew before that you even had one days grace.

the 14 days was a concesion from the days when you could only apply by post

and had no legal footing

it no longer applies,

1 min past midnight and you can be done for no tax

thats right , its called failure to display

you can even have a valid disc that has fallen off and is in the footwell of the car , but it is still an offence

There is no leeway now.

The offence they do you for is "for not displaying a current road fun license"

Obviously, if you haven't got one you can't display it, but people have been done even if it fell off, or if they hadn't put it on the windscreen yet!

Not going to bother for a while. Insurance expires in August and when we return from hols on the 25th I am booked in for a shoulder operation on the 27th July. That is going to stop me riding, driving and all kinds of stuff you use your arm for until October, it'll just be a waste of mot, tax and insurance.

Absolutely right and any other way that they can make it difficult they will. Having tried to renew by the reminder sent poved tricky also. My rant over.

if you are waiting for your tax to come through the post, do not drive it till youve got it. ( they can still do you for not displaying a valid excise licience ) !!!!!!

Yes from September 1st 2008 you have been allowed 5 days grace in which to continue to drive your vehicle without diaplaying a vald tax disc, provided that;

A) You apply online, By phone or by post

B) You apply before the current tax disc has expired

Thought the days of displaying "tax in the post" on yr windscreen were long gone but did notice recently in the fine print of the leaflet about applying on-line that you now get 5 days grace

And you can now apply for the disc on the 5th day of the month it is due to expire, where previously it was the 15th.

Used it right thru last winter though, thru all the snow and whatnot. Bike is a right mess at the moment, salt corrodes aluminium like nothing else. Just wish my twist and go scooter hadn;t gone to the scrap yard in the sky when you get winters like the last one!

Just done mine, and hunted for MOT and Insurance (was applying online), and you dont' need any of it, it does it checks automatically now!!

Much improved service, I use to queue for hours at the post office!!

Yeah it's great, and as you say, no need to hunt for all your docs., just type in the code on the reminder and away you go.

It does save all that buggering about in the Post Office, but on the flip side, it's starved the Post Offices out of a lot of badly needed custom, which is a shame.
