Well Luke's given up smoking for a good few months now and is dropping massive hints that I should give up now as well!!

So I have dug out my E-cig brought the refill thingys!

Any tips or advice on how not to light up the nasty cigarettes?

Chose not to use the ecig as I didn't want to replicate smoking in anyway,I wanted to cut off from it completely and not have another habit to deal with

I'm not sure I could and would rather just have a nicotine addiction than a tobacco addiction.

So completely cold turkey? Not sure I could do that, did you find that you ate more? Did you take up a new hobby to replace the smoking?

I gave up years ago now.

I had no money.

I didn't die.

I just got better at breathing and had more money.

I found taking slow deep breathes every now and then took the craving away.

After two days you are clear of nicotine in your system.

Why go back after that ?

If you were lost somewhere you wouldn't have cigs and you wouldn't come to any harm.

All the screaming and moaning is a learned behaviour from just hearing others going do lally ...... NO ONE needs a cig.

The excuses. That's what keeps you there.

You've already told yourself you can't do it.

Do you KNOW how much your brain listens to itself ?

The power of rehearsal and visualisation work.

Keep telling yourself you can't and you won't.

Yes you can.

Two days is all it takes.

I had the champix tablets but hated them

The thing that I kept telling myself was that if I have one I know ill have another one and I didn't want to start back at day one

I did put weight on,my boobs got massive but I expected that and thought id wait until I felt completely free of cravings before I dealt with the weight, then I joined a gym,ive lost most of the weight but the boobs still seem huge

Its a fabulous feeling not to be a slave to when I can have the next cigarette

We went on holiday in June and I felt sorry for all the people stood outside the airport getting their last puffs in before not being able to smoke for hours, its liberating x

I gave up about 15 years ago. I used nicotine patches for a little while. I think the price tag hit £4.50 for 20 and I decided that was too high. (The patches made it a little easier, but more really after I stopped using them, as they cost a fair amount back then and I was not going to waste that money by going back to smoking.

However at the end of the day there is only one thing that really helps with giving up - you have to want to stop, not someone suggesting you should, but you deciding that yes you really want to stop. The rest may not be easy but it is achievable.

I went on the NHS course years ago, it is really helpful, and used Zyban, which made the process a walk in the park.

Yes, a trip to the cardiac unit to see all the walking dead on oxygen focusses the mind somewhat!

Just over 3 months now. Tride patches 1st the basterds don't stay on an very nearly gave up but last ditch attempt I bought a cheap ecig then just did it day by day. Still use the ecig but on zero nicotine now guess iv just got my head to sort out now as I don't even want a cig any more but still cant leave the house without my ecig....

I agree with what's said about ecigs you are replacing 1 addition for anther but for me and after 32/33 years of smoking it's by far the lesser evil I can breath again smell again and best of all I don't smell. No scratch that best of all my doughters got her dad back. Best of luck lucy x

I gave up 30 years ago, cold turkey.

At some point, you realise that as an educated, thinking adult, the choice to smoke is simply ludicrous and stop.

Good luck to everyone that's given up in remaining an ex-smoker.

Five months off now, its still an urge but less so as time passes.

It may help if others mentioned how many they smoked and for how long.

Thirty years, the last five around 50 a day.

As you can imagine, after a few weeks off my chest and lungs felt brand new. From being unable to run for a bus I felt that I could run a marathon.

I made a plan of action lol

Elites, online 100 = 2 a day for 50 days: this cleared my chest from the tobacco but left me with the nicotine addiction.

Join smoke free Berkshire, you will have a local smoke free club near you. You get loads of free quit smoking aids.

I took the nicorette inhalators plus 24 hour patches Niquitin clear. I used both for two months ish then stopped the patches.

The inhalators work well for me, people at the smoke free club didnt like them as it caused them embarrassment sucking on a plastic bullet shape aid, it doesn't bother me so....

I never set myself any firm rules, I used any aid or distraction that I had available and still do for now.

Good luck

Yes, I always spent so much time with my horses I never bothered with any cardio exercise per se, but I don't have one at the moment so I am swimming a lot. I can't believe how much my heart/lung capacity has responded, I can now front crawl indefinitely and only need about four breaths per length!
