"I've got avira free. Will try ccleaner - do I need an internet connection for that?" Damn. Yes. I hadn't thought that through. However, if you have internet access at a neighbour's and a memory stick, you can download it onto that and probably do it from there. Whenever my pc or lap top act up, I defrag, clean it up, run dskchk and scan it for viruses. It sometimes seems to work.

" I've done everything I can think of, and everything suggested to me and I still keep getting told that Google chrome and Mozilla are untrustworthy so it can't connect. I even used harsh words!!! Proper swears and everything!

"yiur wireless adaptor could be disabled in windoww open the start menu and type in "network and sharing center" and open it. next click "change adaptor settings" on the left hand side you should now be able to see your connections you should have two or three showing up.(lan, wlan and bluetooth) if your wireless adaptor is greyed out and says disabled right click it and select" enable" then try to connect as you normally would" Ok, the light on the WiFi button is white. And in the network and sharing Centre it says I'm currently connected.
