I've just spent the weekend trying to connect my laptop to the internet with no success. I posted a thread and got some great advice but after trying all of it and even trying someone else's internet connection still no joy.

I suspect I need a complete clean up job, but I know what my lappy has been used for and what kind of pics are on it

so I'm wary of just taking it anywhere.

Has anyone got any suggestions or recommendations of a trustworthy techy type in the Sheffield area who could help?

I'd happily take a look at it for you but I'm not in Sheffield. Which I appreciate doesn't help you much!

Just out of interest, you don't have anything like Zonealarm loaded on it, or an internet security program of that nature?

Damn. Yes. I hadn't thought that through. However, if you have internet access at a neighbour's and a memory stick, you can download it onto that and probably do it from there.

Whenever my pc or lap top act up, I defrag, clean it up, run dskchk and scan it for viruses. It sometimes seems to work.

I've done everything I can think of, and everything suggested to me and I still keep getting told that Google chrome and Mozilla are untrustworthy so it can't connect.

I even used harsh words!!!

Proper swears and everything!

What brand of laptop is it. ? Reason I ask is some models have a single button to turn the in built WiFi adapter.

Between my phone and my tablet I don't use the laptop much any more, but there are some things you need the desktop site for.

Sorry cannot help with advice on tech place, as that wee bump (t'Pennines) is in the way.

But will the pesky thing work when connected to your router via a network cable? If it will then th issue is with the wifi connection ction if not the there is something on the laptop preventing access.

I would agree that installing and running ccleaner would be a good move. After that I would suggest installing and running Malwarebytes (the free version is available at www.malwarebytes.org).

I realise that both ccleaner (www.ccleaner.com) and malwarebytes will need to be downloaded from t' internet which is a tiddly bit of an issue. However both are titchy little programs and can be downloaded on another computer and transfered via a usb stick. If that option is not available then you can probably download them on your phone and then connect the phone the the laptop by usb cable and copy them across. (Though I would try to avoid this option if possible.)

If you can get these wee progs on your laptop, then malwarebytes will complain that it definitions are out of date - they amost always are, as they get updated at least 3 times a day. Dont worry too much if it fails to update them, the definitions it comes with should be sufficient for what you need.

I did manage to get some updates using the Ethernet cable but I still couldn't connect.

And I just tried at someone else's house using their internet and that wouldn't connect either.

Cool at the top of the key board should be a button. It has a symbol on it similar to the WiFi signal on your iPhone. Is it orange when the laptop is on ?

I don't want to be rude or cheeky, but is wifi switched on on the laptop?

I'm not a huge techie, but I don't see how using something like Ccleaner will help you connect. You could temporarily disable your anti-virus and firewall, and if that works you simply need to go into them and 'allow' your router and browser access.

Like someone else said, stupid as it might sound and not to sound patronising, just check you haven't flicked off the wifi switch by accident. My dell laptop has one on the side and some have them at the front.

My best guesses are that the wifi is off on the laptop, the antivirus is preventing connection or the wireless card isn't configured to use DHCP (obtain an IP address automatically).

yiur wireless adaptor could be disabled in windoww

open the start menu and type in "network and sharing center" and open it.

next click "change adaptor settings" on the left hand side

you should now be able to see your connections you should have two or three showing up.(lan,wlan and bluetooth)

if your wireless adaptor is greyed out and says disabled right click it and select" enable" then try to connect as you normally would

Ok, the light on the WiFi button is white.

And in the network and sharing Centre it says I'm currently connected.

I believe I have resolved the main problem. Whilst running a defrag I noticed that the clock seemed to think it was 2008!

I have reset the time and date (someone did suggest that on the other thread) and now it seems I'm connected.

Did I mention that I'm a bit of a techy dunce?

Now cake I understand...

Am now connected and onsite on my lappy.

Thank you to everyone who offered suggestions and advice, it's all very much appreciated.

I know people wonder why anyone would ask some of the questions that get posted on here since they rarely have anything to do with swinging but there's usually someone who knows about everything!
