Budget is up to about 22k and yeah i guess it was vague.

I'm torn between getting another Juke, a Hyundai ix35, a Citroen ds3 or a Renault captur.

Ideally I'd like a Volvo v40 but the lease prices are too high

these days I would say don't buy anything bigger than you really need, to save on fuel and road tax, unless your have a good paying job and don't care about the running cost's, then buy what ever grabs your fancy

LOTUS=loads of trouble usually serious.

Citreon, Renault, Peugeot are all crap, I know I have had my own garage for 30 years and they are all trouble, Ford fiestas are one of the best small cars on the market and are consitantley the number one best seller, says a lot about them

Why not buy a small funky Japanese (prob built in UK anyhow) and get it repainted how you want it?

Mini, BMW, VW, Audi, Merc, Any Frenchy all overrated and overpriced shite.

After 100 years of making them I'd expect it to work and last. Only Japanese designed cars seem to be able to do this.

(That said Ford and Vaux make decent cars just don't have that 'kudos' to their badges).

I'm on my 4th Alfa and never had a single issue. Most of the people telling you they're unreliable have either never owned one or owned one from the 70's or early 80's.

Most of what is considered standard in cars now was pioneered by Alfa; galvanized bodies, common rail diesel, direct injection petrol and multi-link suspension (designed in conjunction with Ferrari) were all introduced by Alfa Romeo. The electrics are all Bosch too so non of the old electrical fault stereotypes apply either. That being said, they do have their niggles and they're not the kind of car that you can neglect or miss the odd service.

Should explain I've done over 2000 mot tests so you are specifically looking for faults. And some cars mismatch their reputation as was said about Alfa.....

Mercedes' fall from grace to living on a name made 20 years ago is an example. The used to make the best cars around but then went after the green and now they're plastic shit.

A loud bang came from behind, wheels locked and I went from the fast lane to the hard shoulder in a straight line between two trucks.

Basically - the engine blew up, scattered bits across the motorway and nearly killed me.

We parted ways a few weeks later when I sold him to a yuppie for far more than he was worth. Still in bits.

He looked nice but was a right fucker to drive and not the most comfortable car I've ever owned.

We're just about to get a cheap runabout for Fox. Convertible. And French. And after reading all the above? Still getting one.

I've driven cars of all nationalities, engine sizes, body styles and ages. If a car is going to be unreliable it will be - there's no guarantees simply cos it's Japanese/German or from wherever. When it comes to second hand if it's been serviced regularly and looked after and you have a decent history then that's good enough for me.

And I'd never - ever - buy a brand new car.

The Giulietta is a good car. If you look at the reliability figures they're right near the top (for first MOT passes).

I think the usual failure for most Alfa's is worn upper wishbone bushes, but they're easy and cheap to sort. I've poly-bushed mine so they should last considerably longer.

No me neither... mine is a year old, someone else took the hit yet I still get what appears to be a brand new car with 8,000 miles on the clock.

That was a narrow escape though. I've flogged my last two VW Golfs for more than the scrappy would give me and my last one had 235,000 miles on the clock. I can't grumble but I can't see past VW either.

I've a company car. It's German - but even if it broke and was unreliable I wouldn't have to pay to fix it and would get a courtesy car.

I guess it makes it a little easier as it's not my cash covering any reliability issues.

Not neccessarily. I've owned BMWs for 14 years now. At the moment I still have an old 328i coupe with 200 bhp. On the motorways, I keep the revs between 3 & 3 1/2 thousand revs & can keep it between 35 - 50 mpg. My insurance with Privilege is just under £450 fully comp with all the curtesy car, screen, breakdown trimmings. In the last 14 years, I've never been at the roadside broken down. With companies like EuroCarParts, parts are not expensive anymore. Just replaced both the front anti-roll bar drop links as they were old & worn - £12 each from my local motor factors. Dirt cheap. Servicing is a lot cheaper because my twin cam 24 valve engine has a chain not a cam belt. Servicing form me is buying just oil, filter, fuel filter & plugs. I have a cone air filter so that just gets washed. Beemers can be dirt cheap to own & run.

Only really good advice I can give is dont buy new unless you feel that it is worth loosing 4 to 6 of your 22K in the first year so you can park a car with the latest number plate on your drive to impress the neighbours.

But I really fancy a Citroen Ds3

The problem is all these French car manufacturers make really nice well styled cars, Citroen have come along way in visual appeal. But remove the nice looking shell and it's still the same shit underneath

A loud bang came from behind, wheels locked and I went from the fast lane to the hard shoulder in a straight line between two trucks.

Basically - the engine blew up, scattered bits across the motorway and nearly killed me.

We parted ways a few weeks later when I sold him to a yuppie for far more than he was worth. Still in bits.

He looked nice but was a right fucker to drive and not the most comfortable car I've ever owned.

We're just about to get a cheap runabout for Fox. Convertible. And French. And after reading all the above? Still getting one.

And I'd never - ever - buy a brand new car.

I don't buy - it's a lease through my employer!

I've a company car. It's German - but even if it broke and was unreliable I wouldn't have to pay to fix it and would get a courtesy car.

I guess it makes it a little easier as it's not my cash covering any reliability issues.

That's my argument it's not my own car I only put fuel in it and same I get a courtesy car when it goes wrong so I'm thinking fun car over boring but reliable

Hyundai i40 or i35 belting motors lots of kit for your money and a good warrenty

likewise kia belting little cars

was delivering these to customers for arnold clerks all over the country last year much preferred them to the audis and beemers which just felt heavy and lethargic

Rule of thumb. For me is if its a company car / lease go for the car you probably wouldn't put your own money into Lol

As for all the this is carp that is crap I don't think there's a truly bad car built theses days. And as for break downs all makes of cars break down regardless of make cost or country of origin

How long do you keep the car anyway just out of interest

And on the alfas are unreliable front I used to deal with a guy who was is a mechanic and all he worked on was Italian. Acts and german one he told me afla 156 onwards reliability wise they were as good if not better that there German contemporaries and as Jeremy Clarkson once said about alfas if you do break down you got something really beautiful to look at

I saw a Disco Volante today, I'd be happy to break down in one of those. Simply the most beautiful car I've ever seen...

What you want or need is pretty vague

Budget is up to about 22k and yeah i guess it was vague.

I'm torn between getting another Juke, a Hyundai ix35, a Citroen ds3 or a Renault captur.

Ideally I'd like a Volvo v40 but the lease prices are too high

Juke is crap for rear headroom & boot, DS3 is a nice supermini, nothing special, Captur has no elbow room, and a weak engine. The ix35 has a cheap interior.

Have a look at the Suzuki S-cross. good drive, plenty room, and some good deals.

(I don't work for Suziki, BTW!)

From a personal point of view, there isn't a single vehicle available in the UK right now that I would buy.

Unless, I could afford an Aston Martin DB9

It all really boils down to what you want from a car. Your needs, budget, etc.

I, of course, will be sticking with American Muscle cars
