The 'I told you so' habit

in my own little world :-)

Whilst I appreciate that we all have this capability to say 'I told you so', it amazes me that whilst most people seem to be able to keep it dormant (well most of the time!) others really don't appear to be able to control it!

What pleasure do people get out of highlighting other peoples' mistakes / misfortune? And in some cases again and again and again?

Why do some people think they have the right to critisize other peoples decisions - and on a pulic forum as well?

I'm sorry - not a particularly positive thread - in spite of the sunny weather

It can be a positive prompt too though can't it?

Sometimes you need a shove to say hi to someone

Then, if it works out OK, it's good to say "told ya didn't I?"

Martyn has 2 daughters, aged 20 and 21...

If i had a pound for every time he has said " i told you so " to them I'd be kinda sunning it upon my very own desert island !...

The thing is though, he always let's them make their own mistakes and they accept the fact that yes, when it all goes wrong he did in fact, 'tell them so ! '

It is the nature of a public forum, in that anything goes!

Any thread/subject will attract positive as well as negative response/reactions.

Some people are more diplomatic whilst others are not.

People who are thin-skinned may find the forums intimidating.

Good to have a thick skin and flame-proof suit to hand for certain!

It's the people who criticise the personal preferences of others that "amuse" me.

THEY'RE entitled to have a preference you're not!

A lot of bored people out there, need something to amuse themselves I suppose!!

I don't disagree with anyone having their own opinion or preferences, I do disagree with those who try to push their ideas onto others.

I also have a problem with other people starting threads with other peoples lives as the discussion point!

I think in some people it's down to their own feeling of self worth. Some have little, so it makes them feel better about themselves to say 'I told you so' or to talk about other peoples lives instead of getting on with their own.

What an interesting subject, well done to the OP for posting. Personally I don’t use the line ‘I told you so’ except in jest, I have more patients to wait for people to come back of their own accord in their own time to say, ‘You were right, I should have listened’.

It seems to me that the actual line ‘I told you so’ is often not voiced as frequently as people perceive, yes ‘perceive’, its one of those things whereby folks sort of see someone else thinking it while quite often not actually saying it but of course that is rubbish, they can only GUESS what the other is thinking and typically they are wrong.

Typically it goes hand-in-hand where there is a lack of trust. In simplistic terms consider parent and child, “Don’t do that you will hurt yourself” the child ignores the advice and promptly hurts itself but then for some strange reason despises the person who warmed them of the danger! I always found that to be rather strange but its also something that seems to carry on in to adult hood. Some times you hear someone say to a friend or workmate – “Oh shut up your not my dad” why would an adult say that to another adult if not because of some embedded childhood issue?

I dare say there are two basic reason why someone might say ‘I told you so’, one is to rub salt in the wound but another reason could simply be patting themselves on the back, fact is it feels good to be right about something but it doesn’t have to follow that its intended to be derogative to the other person. Consider the other complimentary line ‘I can see this will end in tears’ and can often be followed with ‘I so hope I’m wrong’ whist knowing your not wrong.

Interesting stuff
